How come nobody is talking about the RFID chips in passports?
http://www.wired.com/news/privacy/0,1848,65412,00.html

If you dont have a passport, Id recommend applying for one immediately. Or else all of your data could be available to anyone walking around near you.

This is an outrage and Im surprised I havent seen more about it on these forums. Write your congress people. This program needs to be killed before it is rolled out to every American citizen.

1. It's been discussed many times, but topics
get archived pretty quickly around here..

If you look in the Demopedia section. there's probably a lot of info from here..:)

2. I understood...
...that our government, in a fit of isolationism that actually is ok this time, wasn't on board with the program. But that was two weeks ago.

10. LOL!
Holy Mother of God!

The birth certificate is too old? What's it written in? Hieroglyphics on papyrus? Cuneiform in clay? Maybe it's a cave painting?

Your husband should be revered for being the most venerated elder!!!

Your gubmint dallahs at work!

5. We are waiting until after
the chips are impanted under our skin.

You should look up the thread on the RFID cards issued to school kids in Texas. Kids can't be relied on to remember to carry an ID card everywhere, so the next step is...

7. because if you take one to 7-11 and microwave it with a burrito....
it doesn't work so well any more....

They keep invading our privacy with devices, so we keep destroying the devices.

11. I foresee a snag with that approach ...
... maybe not when leaving the country but I bet you have a headache
when you try to get back into the Homeland with a zapped RFID ...

Don't get me wrong - I'll happily "accidentally" zap any RFID that
appears in my driver's licence or whatever and be prepared to slog
through the paperwork (at least it ties a plod up at the same time)
but when the alternative might be being kept out of the country (or,
in your case, a charter flight to Gitmo) maybe I'll think twice about
zapping the passport ...

9. I was wondering the same thing.
The extremists have been wreaking havoc in so many places that we don't have a chance to look at everything.

12. someone who actually works wiuth these chips posted here
and said the fears are (currently) overblown. Just putting it in your pocket is apparently enough shielding to stop it from being read.

13. Not just in your pocket.
What will stop RFID readers (and anyone who might want to steal your info) is wrapping it in aluminum foil.

If the covers of the passports were made of foil paper, it would stop unauthorized snooping.

However, none of the above speaks to the privacy invasion issue.

14. Great! Put it in your tinfoil hat!
I like that remedy :)
Meanwhile, what happens when you unwrap it at airport security?
