This might have already been done, but I had an idea for a "Progressive's Calendar"
Katrina Sumner, Greene County - followed, run off road gave me the idea.
One of the posters reminded us that Karen Silkwood was killed on November 13, 1974. Another poster asked who Karen Silkwood was.
I hadn’t realized that it has been 30 years since Silkwood’s death, nor did it dawn on me that some (younger) DUers might not know who she was. I thought “why not publish a standard calendar that highlights the accomplishments and sacrifices of progressives according to the dates these events occurred?" I imagine the calendar would have something written for every day of the year (if not multiple entries).
A few examples for 2004
January 22—31st anniversary of Roe v Wade (1973)
May 4—34th anniversary of the Kent State killings (1970)
June 9—50th anniversary of Joseph Welch’s “Have you no decency…” remark to Sen Joseph McCarthy (1954)
August 28—41st anniversary of Marting Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech (1963)
November 13—30th anniversary of the death of Karen Silkwood (1974)
It would help us to remember the work and sacrifice that went into building an ideal American society. And what remains to be done.
Just thinking off the top of my head; a community like DU could provide the citations. Submissions could cover events in the areas of social justice, environment, labor, health, economics, education, etc.—all subjects important to Progressives.
We have a calendar in our kitchen that we use to note school events, work schedules, basket ball games, cubscout meetings, etc. I think a calendar like this would help my two children, ages 12 and 6, learn about significant events on a daily basis!
