Gay Teen Expelled From High School (Updated)
f this wasn't enough they took six days to decide to expel James from school, citing 'immoral behavior and supporting an immoral cause.' “The reason for expulsion and the suspension is the fact that what I have done/am is a Class A offense. I am not given a chance to appeal to honor council, it’s “too sensitive”;”

1. This kind of stuff just makes me sick
I cannot believe the ignorance of these people. The suicide rate of gay teens is already off the chart.

Haven't they actually thought about "What Would Jesus Do?"

4. They don't care...
about the suicide rate among gay teens. They look at it as one less queer to deal with. Typical repuke family morals, ya know?

And yeah, they thought about what THEIR Jesus would do, and they reckon he has told them to start a war on the queers of the nation.

3. As a private school, they really can do anything they want...
Not that it makes them corrent (Because they're not). I just don't know what kind of case the ACLU could put together. I attended a private catholic high-school where one of the teachers (who taught religion to Freshman & Sophmores) happened to be Lesbian. I believe the school knew it, but didn't really care. To make a long story short she showed up at a Varsity Basketball game holding hands with her girlfriend in the stands and they fired her the next day.

6. ummm, telling his parents might have been a no-no
Because he is a legal adult and specifically instructed the school not to tell his parents about this. I don't know enough about Texas common law, but the school may be liable for public disclosure of private facts or some other tort like that.

If I were a member of the TX bar, I'd a least look into to it for him.

16. NOT if the school has students that take government loans...
Or has ANY government funding whatsoever.

7. His parents probably wanted him to actually get an education
I don't think public schools in Texas would provide the same quality of education as a private school . . . but then, I don't know that for sure.

10. Well, I went to public school in Texas, and it was excellent.
But it was more than 17 years ago, and it was El Paso, not Dallas.

But I really hate baseless public-school bashing, so lay off, eh?

He said the kids parents sent him to Bible school "because his parents wanted him to actually get an education" implying that public schools don't provide that.

Read back through the thread carefully.

13. Schools in the Dallas ISD are better performers than the
private schools.

When you get to Texas, you have to think in terms of private usually meaning religious and often watered down education. There was an article in the Dallas Observer about 3 years ago that showed statistics that kids in Dallas public schools far outperformed private school students.

(The same goes for public/private colleges in Texas. Which is better Bubba Private Jesus U. or University of Texas, Austin?)

15. That is good to know. Since I moved to CA, I've been appalled
at the public education. Even teachers use poor grammer, so it is no wonder the kids say things like: "Me and him is going to the mall."

And, the teachers take so many days off. Admittedly, I was in school a long time ago, but we were only out of school for vacations or holidays. I don't know how parents of grade school kids can have a job and also deal with all the days off their children have.

24. There is good and bad here.
My son's school here in San Francisco is pretty good. Unfortunately, many schools in CA are dealing with huge numbers of immigrant kids and can't be as finicky about grammar as many of us would like.

8. unfortunately, the school was within its rights
it's a private school and they can screw with the students all they want as long as they don't piss off Mater and Pater

17. The school lost it's "in loco parentis" rights when he turned 18.

AFAIK, "in loco parentis" school rights are only in effect for minors. The school most likely was not actin in loco parentis as soon as he became of adult status. They therefore were wrong in telling his parents about something he specifically instructed them not to do.

A trial would likely result in a huge judgement against the school. Hell,it would probably settle out of court for up to a million, which is most likely their insurance cap. Unless of course they are self insured. Faith based insurance, anyone? In that case, he could end up shutting the school down. Wouldn't that be a nice outcome?

18. the private schools that i have had dealings with
all have standards of conduct. If he violated that standard of conduct, the school would be able to expell him AND inform the persons paying his tuition as to the cause of his expulsion...I am sure that the school would be protected in a similar manner.

9. Where are his parents in all of this???
Whether he's gay or not, they should be outraged at the treatment their son is getting. Expelled 6 months before graduation???? For hosting a website???

I think this school needs to be bombarded with emails. What a terrible, horrible way to treat a fellow human being.

21. If they're sending the kid to Christian school
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 04:40 PM by Southpaw Bookworm
They probably think that:

A: He deserves it for being a Sodomite.
B: This might be the impetus for him to see the evil of his ways and become an "ex-gay".
C: This is sooooo horrible for them. After all, what will the neighbors think now that they know the parents raised a gay *gasp* son, and now Dad will never become a member of the Lions Club and Mom can never show her face at the church ladies' auxilliary ever again.

12. This is a horrible story
The school over reacted and why should they care if the website is hosted from home? I am glad that the boy is doing okay with his parents.

We need to send e-mails to the school and its headmaster.

19. Why did this kid tell the "principal" anything.
presumably they got all thier info from another kid.

As a student I would have no obligation to discuss my life outside of school with anyone in school.

Schools have no right to know what websites or businesses I run and I would not give them any info about the subject.
