Poll question: If AAR has launched in your area
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 09:04 PM by Politicub
do you still listen to NPR?

Since AAR came to Atlanta, I hardly ever tune in to All Things Considered or Morning Edition. The style of AAR isn't very newsy, but NPR, at least its drive time news shows, seems tired.

I listen to NPR shows on the weekend, but I haven't listened to any NPR news shows for at least two or three months. This is coming from someone who has listened to NPR religiously for more than 15 years in all of the cities that I have lived in.

Could it be Steve Innskeep? Hmmmm?!

1. They deserve to lose their listeners
When they use commentators from the american enterprise institute as "experts."

2. Judging by the poll
most people agree with you.

I feel generally the same way. It's a shame, too. I used to love NPR's news shows.

4. My Bestest Friend Works For Local NPR
and they are in complete denial about AAR. Think of it as silly.

The thing about NPR ratings, they get them - but separately from MSM stations. I can't wait to see AAR's ratings here...

10. I never thought any station would pry me away from NPR
But AAR is addictive once you start listening to it. NPR seems more mainstream, CNN-like. I can't believe I just typed that!

The production values of Morning Edition are clearly higher, but I just don't enjoy it any more

21. I Hear Ya - Because The GOP Has Been After NPR
for years, they appeared to be bending to the pressure during then Bush years. Sometimes even sounding "whorish" just like CNN. opps, did I say that?

5. Weird choices.
I guess you know you're in the south when you think NPR is "liberal".

Before AAR, I listened to KPFA Pacifica Free Speech radio from Berkeley, or KGO which has a good mix of local right and left wing talk shows.

I never listened much to NPR. It's too corporate-dominated and pro-war/pro-establishment.

8. When I lived in LA
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 10:48 PM by Politicub
I listened a little bit to Pacifica. Democracy now was great. My favorite radio show of all time was The Morning Becomes Eclectic on NPR affiliate KCRW, though.

But I didn't know there was a "liberal enough" litmus test.

19. I still try to catch Democracy Now whenever I'm in range
It's carried on a local Community College station (KSVR), and they only reach out a few miles.

Pacifica is every bit as good as AAR. Better in many ways.

7. I kinda like KPFA
But they are a bit too out of touch with the mainstream.

You pretty much have to be a radical anarcho-socialist african-american vegan womyn to really feel at home there...

And the music they play is mostly beyond depressing.

9. I was mainly wanting to find out if long time NPR listeners
are switching to AAR.

I almost added more choices to cover a bigger range of options. It got complicated, like a fractal, so I stuck with the NPR/AAR question. :)

13. I've been listening for a while...
I've been listening to NPR for a while now and when (hopefully soon) AAR comes to Boston (I can't get the station it's on now where I love), I'd probably end up splitting my time between the two.

I usually listen to NPR on the weekends for the more social programs since I can only get AAR from our computer. I mainly listen for On Point, Morning Edition, and the BBC World Service while I'm driving. It all depends on my mood. If I want news, I'll check out NPR and if I want commentary I'll turn on Air America.

I used to listen to NPR, but now I have found C-Span radio. That's all I listen to, until my wife gets into the car, and currently, it's all Christmas music all the time. :(

Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 11:21 PM by Zinfandel
And when I'm in my car I put in the Sirius receiver and I put the Sirius receiver in my home stereo system whenever I want to listen to AAR.

www.airamericaradio.com

No AAR affiliate station here in Eureka/Arcata.

Buy something from AAR store while your at it, and support Air America Radio.

18. Still NPR listener
Actually it is more about Minnesota Public Radio than National Public Radio.

Our local MPR shows are quite good (Midmorning/Midday). MPR archives and streams live those shows, I highly reccommend them.
http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/programs/midmorning/
http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/programs/midday/

(Check out today's(Tuesday's) 2hr Midday focus on Iran, very good)

I am out of range of the nearby AA stations. I prefer Ed Schultz on the Internet, though I have caught some Franken.

When you have the Internet, Public Radio across the country opens up and there is lots of good listening out there (mixed in with the BBC World Service any time of the day/night).

20. NPR is just too tame
compared to AAR. I used to listen more here in Portland, OR between the NPR station & KBOO (Pacifica), but now I pretty much listen to AAR exclusively. While right-wing hate radio is delivering idealogical red-meat 24/7, NPR is doing one-too-many f*#$ing stories about Appallachian quilts or such. And Pacifica radio, for all the good they might do, is basically preaching to a marginal, liberal sub-culture & consciously or otherwise not widening their appeal. For better or worse, AAR seems better at attracting a broader audience, which is what the left needs.

Now listen to AAR almost exclusively. Only listen to Prarie Home Companion on local NPR affiliate.

24. I'm surprised at the poll responses
I didn't realize how many people have switched!

I'm like you. I love my Car Talk and Prarie Home Companion.

I turned over to NPR this morning, and the news segment sounded like a Bushco press release about the administration's economic summit. It's no wonder people are choosing AAR.

26. Yep.
I like Car Talk. They are the ones who made me aware of Better World Club, which I have joined, switching from AAA.

Love Garrison! He also has a brief morning show about literature/poetry which I don't get to listen to.

NPR has been sounding bad for quite some time now.

Used to listen and was a pretty active contributor. I wonder how long it will take them to notice that they're losing money as well as listeners?

27. I have mentioned my concerns to them
when they have called to ask for money. The second time, the lady said that she would "write down" my issues so that they would not send me any more solicitations. But I just got a letter in the mail asking for money, so I guess they are not listening yet...
