It only takes one sin to stay out of heaven.
That is exactly what Billy Graham`s son just said on Hannity`s show. Still trying to scare people. It will never end.

5. many christians would agree with him
it is the whole concept of the holiness of god and the inability of man to be in his presence without the sacrifice that christ made to absolve them of their sins...

not new...not uncommon

17. I agree
That's pretty much their Christian message. Which is why belief in Christ is so important to them. Very Hellenistic in my opinion.

8. That's what they told me in my Catholic parochial elementary school.
But only if it's a "mortal" sin -- you know, something really serious like murder or eating meat on Friday.

19. no, if you truly repent you are saved
in the Catholic faith. No sin excludes you from grace. It's refusing to atone or acknowledge your sins that can exclude you.

18. absolutely not! . . . "original sin" is an asinine concept . . .
created by certain religious traditions to help control the flock . . . there are other traditions, traditions which believe that "original blessing" precedes sin, both original and otherwise . . .

"What religion must let go of in the West is an exclusively fall/redemption model of spirituality -- a model that has dominated theology, Bible studies, seminary and novitiate training, hagiography, psychology for centuries. It is a dualistic model and a patriarchal one; it begins its theology with sin and original sin, and it generally ends with redemption.

"Fall/redemption spirituality does not teach believers about the New Creation or creativity, about justice-making and social transformation, or about Eros, play, pleasure, and the God of delight. It fails to teach love of the earth or care for the cosmos, and it is so frightened of passion that it fails to listen to the impassioned pleas of the anawim, the little ones, of human history. This same fear of passion prevents it from helping lovers to celebrate their experiences as spiritual and mystical. This tradition has not proven friendly to artists or prophets or Native American peoples or women."

(snip)

"The universe itself, blessed and graced, is the proper starting point for spirituality. Original blessing is prior to any sin, original or less than original."

(snip)

"We must choose. A spirituality is a way, a path. . . The West has been traveling the fall/redemption path for centuries. We all know it; we all have it ingrained in our souls; we have given it 95 percent of our energies in churches both Catholic and Protestant. And look where it has gotten us. Into sexism, militarism, racism, genocide against native peoples, biocide, consumerist capitalism, and violent communism. I believe it is time to choose another path. The path that is the most ancient, the most healing, the most feminist of the paths, even in the biblical tradition itself."

from Original Blessing: A Primer in Creation Spirituality by Matthew Fox, 1983 . . .

of course.

I got hauled to the priest's office in high school for writing a logical proof of the non-existence of hell, so y'all know where I'm at. :)

15. If I remember my childhood church teachings . . .
The one mortal sin is not believing in God. If you don't believe, you can't ask for forgiveness. Guess I'm going to hell. Oh wait! When you don't believe in God, you also don't believe in hell. Problem solved!

20. he's wrong
Christianity allows for forgiveness. Catholicism teaches that you can be forgiven any sin provided you truly repent in your heart.
For some Protestants, like Calvinists, your fate is pre-ordained. Nothing you can do can change that. Based on that, I prefer Catholicism (minus the pedophiles and intolerant Bishop from Denver).
