Al Gore's Mother Dies
Pauline Gore Was Mother of Former Vice President, Wife of Senator

By Teresa M. Walker
The Associated Press
Wednesday, December 15, 2004; 1:08 PM

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Pauline Gore, whose son Al became vice president and nearly captured the presidency and whose husband served a lengthy and distinguished career in Congress, died Wednesday. She was 92.

She had been weakened in recent years by strokes and a heart attack, and died in her hometown of Carthage, said James Bass of Bass Funeral Home. He said the cause of death was not immediately available.

Trained as a lawyer, Pauline Gore was a familiar figure on the campaign trails of her late husband, Albert Gore Sr., and her son, former Vice President Al Gore Jr.

In Tennessee, she was nearly as widely known as her liberal husband and played a central role in much of his campaign strategy. Gore Sr. served in the House from 1939-1953 and in the Senate from 1953-70.

1. I'm very sorry to hear that...

Mrs. Gore was a wonderful lady, and brilliant, both professionally and personally, as well. She was truly the "Backbone" standing behind both Sen. Gore and Al. Barbara Bush could only hope to be 1/500th the woman that Mrs. Gore was--and she'd still never get there.

My deepest sympathies to Al, Tipper, and their children on the loss of their mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother!:-(

I feel Al's pain on having to go through the Holidays coping with the fact that both of his terrific parents are now gone.

B-)
