Went to Casual Men store last night that was playing Hannity
My email to them this morning:

To whom it may concern,

Last evening I was shopping for new clothing in your Naperville, Illinois store. I like the products and pricing, however, this experience was a nightmare.

There was no problem getting help, trying on the clothing, or finding clothing. The problem was the choice of radio "entertainment" piped over the store's speaker system.

What I heard was despicable hate radio from Sean Hannity. I do not choose to listen to hate radio, nor do I expect to hear it from a store I am choosing to shop. This sort of radio programming is inappropriate for a public store that expects to service all members of the public. This demonstrates a political bias by your company that is unacceptable.

Unfortunately, this experience has forced me to forgo any further business with your company in any location in the world until I am informed that company policy forbids political hate radio broadcasts from the public areas of your stores.

Sincerely,
Walter E. Starr
Aurora, Illinois

3. Way to go, Walt!
Why don't you publish their address so more of us can write them. We need to let places like this know how we feel.

If you post the address, I'll write them for sure. My hubby shops at one of their stores here in Charlotte. If they play Hannity, we won't shop there ever again.

I cannot believe a company of their size would really tolerate this sort of thing in the public area of the store.

10. I usually thank businesses for letting me know they support hate.
I tell them that I might never have learned about their business philosophy of hate had they not spewed it at me over their loud speakers.

I then tell them that I'll know better than to shop at their stores in the future.

IMHO, I'd rather know which businesses support hate.

12. There are so many of them in
Illinois, which one was it? I sent E-Mail, telling them I was doing a secret shop near-by and wondered into their store and was so disgusted wouldn't go to any again. If they want to know which one, I will need to know which one you went to, because I'm sure they don't all listen to the same thing...I usually go to the one in Gurnee.

As I have not received a timely response to this issue, I have chosen to share this experience with 60,960 of my closest friends on the internet. This way, the political affiliation of your company can be known to consumers around the world so they cna make better informed purchasing decisions this holiday season.

28. Add them to our lists of who not to buy from
in the economic activism forum.

This might be a matter of that one store piping it in, but at least management will know about in a BIG way and maybe they'll hear from the higher-ups about their choice of hatio.

15. I'm torn about this new car wash
I used to wash my car around once a year, but they built a great new car wash and I have been going every few months. It's very clean and nice and they even give you coffee. Last time I went, they had Fox News on the TV. That station disgusts me so much, I was appalled.

I asked the women behind the counter if she was the owner because they were building a restaurant onto the building and I wanted to know about it. She said yes and during the course of the conversation she struck me as an arrogant, stuck-on-herself sort of person, so I didn't even bring up about the Fox News. I just don't know if I even want to go back and give my money to a person who puts hateful TV in her business.

26. Hear ya Walt - same thing around my neck of the woods
I have a little bigger dilemma. Locally owned tire store and auto repair shop here in town is owned by a woman and her sons that I really liked. Good service, fair prices, have even worked with me when the car needed major repairs and I was a little short on cash. Good people, but...

The mother decided to run for a local (non-partisan) county office. Thought she would be an excellent candidate - open, friendly, knowledgeable, etc. I volunteered to work on her campaign. Got a letter saying there would be a kick off rally at a local high school. Got there and every repug in a 50 mile radius was there touting their campaign or their "guy." She is a huge BushCo fan and I honestly think I saw her IQ plummet during that little fete. I lost all respect for this woman in the space of just a few minutes because she was mouthing the party line about patriotism, supporting the president meant supporting the troops, yadda, yadda, yadda. Now each time I go into their shop they have Faux News (TV in waiting area a new addition) playing the entire time. I often see her or her sons stopping to catch up on the hatefulness and nod their head in agreement. Did I mention that this business is very successful and the woman and the sons are extremely well off? Maybe this plays into the tax cuts for the rich scenario, I don't know.

Anyway, I truly feel like I need to find another place to take my business but my options are very limited. The small town that I live in doesn't offer a wide variety of competitors. Also,as a single woman I have often felt that some shops have tried to take advantage of me thinking that I don't know a lot about vehicles. (I actually have a pretty good working knowledge but still can get gouged when it comes to prices if not careful.)

I ended up not working for her campaign. I did tell her that I wished her well but could not support a party that was so antithetical to my core beliefs as a citizen. She was polite about it and we parted as friends but I still do not feel comfortable spending my money or my time in her establishment. Am I cutting my nose off to spite my face?

BTW - she and her whole slate of candidates won - and the county (along with the state) are going to hell in a hand basket as I type.

Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 02:14 PM by Walt Starr
and should not have been put into such a position.

My wife and I were in a cab to the airport this year where the driver had his radio tuned to some christian preachy station. Cab drivers are allowed to have the radio on, but if asked by the fair, must turn it off.

We requested he turn it off. It also ultimately affected the tip I gave him. Next time we took a cab, a different driver was very nice and did not have his radio on. He could have been every bit as much of a fundamentalist as the first cab driver, but he did not insist upon pushing it on my wife and I. His tip was at least three times larger than the first driver's.

Both Drivers were taking us from our home to the airport.
