Nothing new to most people -- but I've had the (dis)pleasure of catching "Focus on the Family" twice, in the last couple weeks. Here is (in a nutshell) what I've gathered as their message:

1. If you are a woman, and your husband cheats on you, forgive him. If you leave him, you are worse than he is. Forgiveness (a.k.a. being treated like a doormat) is how you get closer to the Lord.

2. If you have a partner who doesn't believe in God, nag them about it until they go fucking crazy, and they leave you -- proving that they are a soulless heathen that doesn't know any of God's good love.

3. If you have an abusive husband -- just pray.

4. A high number of Deathbed conversions are proof that God is real.

5. James Dobson's grandmother was a "leeetle-ol lady" of 95 lbs., but she took on her strapping husband and fasted and made crazy until he died with a pronounciation of the Lord on his lips. Touching.

6. Even if you have a loveless, sexless, abusive marriage, it is necessary for you to stay together to fulfill the wishes of the Lord, because conservative social institutions are good for society (capitalism).

These people are totally whack and bring sappy sentimentality to a new plane. I've decided that anyone who follows these charlatans is crazy, and I will henceforth deal with them as I would deal with coked-up serial rapist. For certain.

My fundie parents are huge fans of his. Every time my kids get out of line, they offer to let me borrow one of his books. Really guys, that's OK.

Of course, my mother is the doormat wife. My stepdad insists that she attend church every time the doors are open, but he conveniently has to work (he's a longshoreman, it's flexible) when it's church time. My children are going to be on drugs because they don't have the fundamental values that you get from church...I keep trying to tell them that I can instill values without church. Ugh!!!

I, for one (my wife also), seek EVERY opportunity to let people know that not all Christians (although the fundies wouldn't consider us Christian since we're Roman Catholics) are of the religious "Christian" right.
