Indicted Principal to keep job
Attorney explains board's decision

Wilson and four others were expected to be arraigned today in federal court in Jackson. State and federal officials released a federal indictment Monday that charges them with money laundering, conspiracy and theft of more than $170,000 from the Meridian School District between March 31, 2000, through January, 2003.

Greenwood school officials evaluated the possibilities before deciding to keep Williams Elementary School's principal, Joycelyn Wilson, in her job while she faces federal embezzlement charges.

"We have no grounds to discipline someone right now, and that's what it would have been - a disciplinary action," Richard Oakes, an attorney for the Greenwood School board, said today.

Wilson has not been convicted of a crime, and district officials say she is good at her job, Oakes said.

The Greenwood district, if it suspended Wilson with pay, would have to get another principal to take her place. This would mean paying two salaries for one job, Oakes said
