How long until the Patriot Act is used against DUers?
Just a stupid question maybe, but then again they are already picking on 11 year olds.
Who will be next?
Whose voice of dissent will be quietened? Olbermann? Moore? Us?

It's a one party corporate backed fascist system, that has all the power, digging & sliming their way into ALL facets of our daily life, hour by hour, night and day, as they get even stronger, as they have for the past four years. (starting over 30 years ago).

We scream about voting in Florida 2000, we get more republican owned, designed & operated electronic voting machines with NO paper trail in even more states...The more we scream, the more they tell the American people something needs to be done about voter fraud and
they take away more ballot machines and stick in more electronic voting machines, exactly what they want, us screaming about it, then saying they are going to do something about it, starting with their cute little names like, "Save America's Vote" (or some other bullshit name) and the more they keep putting in more electronic voting machines...

All the while they keep putting more & more republicans in power and in places of power...the courts, with those electronic voting machines and we have no majority of any kind in power (or the media) to stop them. Where we are at right now and it's going to get much worse...with no way to stop them!!!!

Without a violent revolution. Very sad to say.

The ONLY majority we have is us, we the people of this country, and in huge overwhelming numbers, we've got to unite...devide and conquer has always been the fascist way and unforunately, it's working.

19. There IS a way to stop them
It just takes a little guts to do it. We deny them the funds they need to make war on Iraq and on our own people. There are at least two ways to do this.

The first, is economic activism, which anyone can do. Don't support companies that support Bush or the GOP. Good resources for finding out who these companies are include:

http://www.corpwatch.org/
http://www.followyourmoney.com/
http://www.opensecrets.org/

The second, which is only for the brave because it could land you in jail, is to refuse to pay your federal taxes.

If enough people get involved from this angle, we CAN shut them down.

24. Another idea
I am too much of a wuss to stop paying my taxes, but I am going to take every deduction available to me and make sure I send them as little money as possible. That is something I never bothered with before. If you've never itemized deductions before, this is another motivation to do so.

7. Follow up question, when will your neighbors start spying on you?
Is that the next logical step?
Will the next terrorist attack be perpetrated by a white female librarian with ties to OBL.
It would surely help * put women back in the house, set up neighborhood spy watch in every town and burn all books as sources of evil.

12. Mitt Romney: We need more snoops and snitches in our neighborhoods
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 05:31 PM by bigtree
December 15, 2004

Mitt Romney, governor of Massachusetts, has come up with a stupid if not particularly original idea—meter readers, E.M.S. drivers, law enforcement, private sector personnel, etc., should spy on American citizens, or as he told the New York Times, “be on the lookout for information which may be … useful.”

Since Ashcroft, the Justice Department, the FBI, the CIA—now working, in violation of the domestic prohibition of their original charter, in league with the FBI—or local law enforcement has yet to find terrorists in America—or terrorists they can successfully prosecute, a handful of people have been arrested but none convicted of serious offense—thus Romney’s suggestion, betraying the spirit of the Constitution (i.e., people are to be left alone unless they are breaking laws), will do nothing except cause more animosity and in general create a state of distrust as public workers become Stasi stand-ins.

“We could increase our law enforcement personnel tenfold, but we can’t protect every target,” Romney said. “There are just too many schools, churches, stadiums, bridges, tunnels, roads, subways. We have to be able to find the bad guys before they carry out their acts, and that can only be done through intelligence. The financial resources of our nation and our states should be increasingly devoted to this effort.

I have no doubt. Our civil liberties have been under attack since the establishment of the CIA. The Patriot Act allows the abuses to be exercised openly under the protection of law rather than in secret collusion with compliant judges.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act was enacted in the wake of FBI surveillance of U.S. citizens in the '60's and the '70's. This national security intelligence tool is being recklessly manipulated in the administration's zeal to prosecute their cynical "war on terrorism."
http://fas.org/irp/agency/doj/fisa/

The ACLU has asked the Supreme Court to review whether the Constitution and the Patriot Act permitted the government to use looser foreign intelligence standards to conduct surveillance in criminal investigations in the United States. The Supreme Court refused that request.

The FISA was sponsored in the ‘60's by Sen. Edward Kennedy and others in an attempt to reign in warrantless surveillance. But the FBI and the NSA have used the act to set up secret courts and have perverted the act to conduct surveillance for domestic criminal investigations in addition to their foreign counterintelligence probes.

The FISA court and the Court of Review authorize government wiretaps in foreign intelligence investigations. Under FISA, all hearings and decisions are conducted in secret. The government is normally the only party to FISA proceedings and the only party that can appeal to the Supreme Court.

In an appeal, the ACLU argued that,"These fundamental issues should not be finally by courts that sit in secret, do not ordinarily publish their decisions, and allow only the government to appear before them."

The ACLU and its supporters have asserted that some of their members and many other Americans are currently subject to illegal surveillance, noting that the FBI has already targeted its members in numerous other ways. Under the FISA statute, a U.S. citizen may be subject to a FISC surveillance order for political statements and views that are determined to be unpopular by the secret Court of Review .

According to the ACLU:
- 8,000 Arab and South Asian immigrants have been interrogated because of their religion or ethnic background, not because of actual wrongdoing.
- Thousands of men, mostly of Arab and South Asian origin, have been held in secretive federal custody for weeks and months, sometimes without any charges filed against them. The government has refused to publish their names and whereabouts, even when ordered to do so by the courts.
- The press and the public have been barred from immigration court hearings of those detained after September 11th and the courts are ordered to keep secret even that the hearings are taking place.
- The government is allowed to monitor communications between federal detainees and their lawyers, destroying the attorney-client privilege and threatening the right to counsel.
- New Attorney General Guidelines allow FBI spying on religious and political organizations and individuals without having evidence of wrongdoing.
- President Bush has ordered military commissions to be set up to try suspected terrorists who are not citizens. They can convict based on hearsay and secret evidence by only two-thirds vote.
- American citizens suspected of terrorism are being held indefinitely in military custody without being charged and without access to lawyers.

26. Right after the "thwarted assasination attempt"...
this is not tinfoil hat time. This will come to pass. Of course there won't really be a plot or attempt, but the administration will claim differently.
This will give them:
further proof of bush's anointed status. "God spared him"
an excuse for further erosion of civil liberties
a chilling effect on internet activism
