Are we only postponing the inevitable? That's the impression I've been getting lately.

2. I believe so
I just don't see them living in peace for a long period of time. They may have a short period of solidarity, but I doubt it will last for more than 10-20 years tops.

3. Yes
The Kurds are outta there ASAP and the Sunnis will never acquiesce to a Shiite government because they are afraid of reprisals.

4. The only civil war will be the Kurds declaring their own state
the Sunnis will stick with the Shiias. The problem will then be Turkey, as they do not want the Kurds to claim territory, given the number of Kurds in Turkey. They find a Kurdish state threatening.

5. "Fear will keep the local systems in line"
Maybe.

The kurds will probably stay. They don't have it that bad, yet. They can always try to secede later. If they go now turkey will just kill them all and take the land(or split it with Iraq.)

Sunni/Shia will continue their usual squabbles once the common enemies are gone. But that might be quite a while. It depends. I don't know.

6. Who wants civil war in Iraq more than the neocons and Likudniks?
For years they've been pumping for the division of Iraq into toothless bantustans ruled by puppets. Fostering civil war is the way to get there.

7. We could end up in a civil war and with the neighbours...
...from Syria and Iran joining in. That would be a big mess! But Bush seems to be bent on having a showdown.

8. Who do you think is encouraging the civil war ?
From this article:

http://dahrjamailiraq.com/weblog/archives/dispatches/000148.php

--snip--
Aisha Dulaimy, a resident of al-Adhamiya said, “The reason for this car bomb is the Americans want to cause a split between the Shia and Sunni. But there has never been fighting between the Shia and Sunni in the history of Iraq. They want to make a struggle between us, but it will never work. They tried this before and people responded by making demonstrations together against the occupiers. So they will never make it. We are living as brothers-Shia and Sunni. There is no difference because we all live in the same home, which is Iraq.”

Here is the authors web site:

You won't see this on faux !

11. Unless we kill everybody there first, yes.
We simply cannot win this one.

The only way to win was not to play.

12. Proxy wars with iran
Iran is well aware that iraq will bankrupt bushco and keep him
occupied in his imperial endeavours.... until he leaves office, as
they're surely planning. At 100 billion per year and 500 dead per
year, we can project 2008 as a bankrupt nation with the draft and
massive desertions to avoid being sent to iraq to be executed by
the proxy war.

Its too bad, that those responsible are not the people who are
dying there. That is the really sad part.

13. I hope so.

Let them decide their own course, their own destiny and let events play out as they willl. US interference only makes things worse. Eventually after we tire of justifying this war for access to cheap Middle Eastern Oil, let Iraq decide its own direction.
God hope they eventually forgive us. This war was not waged in my name.

14. I should report this to the mods!
Plainly the DU database is playing up and re-posting messages that were first posted in June 2003. It's obviously out of date because it reads as though the civil war in Iraq hasn't started already, when it's been going for more than a year.
