10. I think you underestimate them.......
I wish I could agree that this would not be the subject of oversight and scrutiny but I really think this administration has gone totally fascist on us. They are going to hunt everyone who expresses an opinion contrary to the party line and make them regret it. Remember how Shrub and Crashcart made all attendees at their political rallys sign loyalty oaths? Remember shrub's statements that you are either for us or against us? This is an unrecovered alcoholic who sees things as black and white, gray is not even contemplated. I for one hope I don't see a representative of the Gestapo at my door anytime soon but I guess its a risk I am willing to take because this country is too important to me to surrender it to the Nazis.

Naive to think this administration isn't actively monitoring any political site or forum that is fund raising for the opposition party.

Not only do I think they monitor, I think they try and disrupt and discredit.

It would take less than 20 geeks to infiltrate every major left wing website, forum, or blog.

At 50k per geek a year (in an election year) thats $1 million.

Chump change!

"Not only that, they capture the full clickstream of what you type,
(AND ERASE) inside this little editor window. They figure that the
freudian slips that one backspaces over are critical info in our
DU terrorism profiles."

I saw something on TV, it must have been the cable channel TechTV, where these entrepreneurs wrote a program like that. You send someone an email, and the recipient is asked to reply by typing into a little window embedded at the bottom of the email. It records all the keystrokes so that you can follow the user as he types and edits the email.

61. possible, but not just like that
for the fbi to be capable to capture your keystrokes there needs to software running on your PC that will capture the keystrokes and send it across the network to a destination.
such software can be a virus, spyware or imbedded in the operating system.

29. No and Yes
Personally, i am dead sure, but i use a proof mechanism that most
people would say is not proof. I am a cheap tin-hat clairvoyant
and a software engineer. The window records all your keystrokes
and it is normal procedure to 'safestore' the raw message on disk
as soon as it comes in off the wire to the server, even before
handing it to the database and the DC software applicatoin.

As well, the clickstream is recorded by the latest electronic
survieillance system that records all things on the internet for the
NSA... no doubt... if you've typed it on the internet, its in
their database.

My proof is being "touched" in my clairvoyant sense, many hours
after deleting something from a post, and having it "read" back to
me in a lucid dream by a "watcher". I realized, then, that even
the backspaces are recorded and that the surveillance folks,
honestly suspecting that each one of us is potentially bin laden
himself until proven otherwise, capture every minute keystroke.

As well, i recall, early on at DU, getting a psychic all-clear from
the NSA watcher people. It arrived as a very strong psychic email,
a person talking to me, that in waking consciousness, i could "hear"
them. The person had read all my posts, studied my background,
my credit card statements, my entire electronic and paper footprint
in life. He apologized for the disrespect of the search, and
acknowledged that i was a full and totally honourable person who
is in the utmost regard an upstanding citizen of this great nation.

What i recall of that lucid moment, was the apology, that someone
shut the file, said that this is an upstanding citizen, and if we
claim to be protecting the constitution, we have no businesss with
this person. It made tears in my eyes. Someone sent me a very very
respectful email of honourable regret, that my privacy had been
invaded by an investigation in to potential enemies of the state,
and that i was cleared of any impropriety to my integrity.

You could of course say i'm just a raving lunatic and imagine such
things... and if you're saying that to me, right now, i'll hear you.

I'm not sorry for being clairvoyant. The security services should
think more quietly, lest a real enemy is as well clairvoyant and
knows. Bullet proof glass and soundproof walls don't stop direct
consciousness interaction.... and even they know that this stuff
exists, themselves employing sensitives to help them in their work.

:-) woof :-)

85. I love you, sweetheart...I really do.
You never fail to amaze me. I don't doubt you for a second. But, it occurs to me that the salvation from snooping hides in the fact of their very accomplished skill and greed. They are awash in data. Swamped and drowning in a sea of Xs and Os. You would be high indeed, (on their priority list) I would think, to warrant much scrutiny. "No time to say hello, good-bye. I'm late, I'm late, I'm late!"

89. Priority and topic
When i first came on DU, was not long after 9/11 and i took a very
unpopular position of suggesting america deserved 9/11. Based on the
hatred i got at that time, there was no doubt that some folks really
possibly thought i was associated with enemies of america to say such
a thing... and that was when such images came through. I believe
that the "priority" was achieved back then.

To say that today, is hardly inflamatory, and its amazing how the
assemblage changes over time. I have also argued, that the second
amendment makes it ok for me to keep my own nuclear weapons, and
some other arguments, that were you not knowing me, one could
interpret as osama-like. One of the world trade center victem
wifes even chimed up in one chat to regard me as deplorable. Back
when "we" were united around the righteousness of the action in
afganistan, and before the iraq mess started.

So much has changed in the average views of DU, that the "foreiginer"
view is much much better represented. Perhaps its that more foreign
peoples are talking on DU, and as well, the bush administration has
become soooo extreme, that moderate voices have stopped defending
their actions as "ours".

Now, i think that the normal process of DU, is to have to share the
database with the FBI regularly, and the IP addresses of non-CONUS
posters.

Thanks for being kind. ;-) I can feel the dark joy of the solstice
cusp... and all of life is sublime.

90. swamped and drowning in data...
Yes, exactly. And Siobel Edmond's point was that there weren't enough folks to even translate all the supposed terrorists' communications. I find it hard to believe that they even have the manpower to go through all the data that DU puts up on the web every day.

I'm sure that it's all recorded somewhere, in PROMIS 3.0 or something like it, but to have actual agents going to actual doors would take a lot of effort. Seems like we'd be pretty much small potatoes.

Unless you're openly advocating violent overthrow of the government, I wouldn't worry about it, personally.

Oh, unless you post all the time to the Election forum and, like me, are now considered a "dissident." Bets are off, there.

43. I passed a police check
I had to file a complaint for an Identity Theft issue ( what a total pain in the ass- be VERY careful on EBAY- I'll post the story later), and the Officer ran a check on me- (at least I think he did- he went back from my house into his patrol car with my license for about 15 minutes) and came back and didn't arrest me, so I guess it's OK for now!

I did hesitate for a long time before I registered. But I just decided I couldn't let them intimidate me into silence and I'm a member of Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and other liberal groups, so I figure they pretty much know where to find me if they want to anyway.

Interesting that Jimmy Carter mentioned on the Larry King show, that he didn't think the country had been this divided since the civil war. There are so many disgruntled people in this country, where would they start?

Unless you're part of a group conspiring to overthrow the government, have a major weapons stash in your house, or are a celebrity, I don't think there's much to worry about.

For practicle purposes, they would only look for real enemies that would seek violence or recruit people to violence. It would be a logistical nightmare to try to arrest so many people under any act on the occasion of speech since speech is such an obvious gaurantee in our Constitution. Too hard to make an end around on it.

Posting opposing views to this Nazi administration won't bring the "G" men nor will they shut this site down. Jesus, can we move on a bit here and put this ridiculous crap to bed? Thank you....

39. I know what you mean...yesterday there was a post about an 11 yr old
being investigated for anti american speech, etc...and I told my dh the biggest evidence of how this country has changed under bushie boy was that there wasn't a single post saying..

"That doesn't happen in the US, there must be more to the story then what we are hearing" instead everyone had absolutely no problem believing it happened just as written....sad commentary on the current state of the US and civil liberties...

say to another, "Welcome to the reopening of your FBI file. The only thing that pisses me off about the possibility is that there must be better things for these clowns to do besides follow around peaceniks like me. BTW some whiz kid soldiers from the NSA at Ft. Meade came and took closeup pics of me and the social studies teacher as we stood on the corner with our anti-war signs on our weekly vigil. Hope my kids can find them and enjoy them years from now with a FOI request. What a crock!

44. I doubt that the Justice Dept has time to investigate political boards
like this when they have to monitor hundreds of Islamic jihad and Arab Nationalist sites.

However, I wouldn't put it past hardcore partisans in the administration or the RNC.

In any case, I wouldn't worry. If they strike at us, we will only have more ammunition with which to expose them. Bring it on, Agent Mike.

45. Do they monitor this site? Sure, I wouldn't bet against it.
But are they going to do anything about it? No, at least not for awhile. First they'll probably come after the people who are politically active in the real world, like me. I don't know how many pictures have been taken of me during an antiwar protest. I'm sure some of them made it to an FBI file somewhere. If you start seeing those of us active in the real world starting to disappear, then you can start getting worried. Until then, I think we're all just fine.

There are millions of people who hate the sons o bitches, we just happen to be very vocal in our hatred, right now that's still protected speech, and there are many more of us than there are of them.

They stole this election, like the stole the 02 election and the 2000 election, they're just getting better at hiding it. All it's going to take is something to wake up the couch potatoes, and if they start rounding people up that should qualify.

If it got that bad, I would'nt want to be here anyway.

55. The FBI will visit for the strangest reasons...
In 2000 I knew a woman whose 10-year high-school reunion was coming up, and she did not want to attend (didn't like high school or her classmates).

She filled out one of those "What are you doing now?" forms and sent it in. Well, in response to one of the questions, my friend put in a wisecrack about Shrub and I don't remember if it was threatening or not, but whatever it was, it motivated the reunion-planning agency to give the FBI a call.

Granted, this woman was not the most stable of people that I've known. But on the basis of a remark intended as a not-so-funny joke, my friend spent a day being interrogated by the FBI. They just showed up on her doorstep one Saturday morning and took her downtown. They brought her back to her apartment in time for dinner.

Nice, huh?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnivore_(FBI) (Cut and past link)

Carnivore is a name given to a system implemented by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that is analogous to wire tapping except in this case, it is email that is being tapped instead of telephone conversations. It is a form of policeware.

US Government officials will confirm or deny little about the physical or logical workings of Carnivore, but there are some basic facts that are generally agreed upon:

In order to be affected, a computer must be physically installed at an ISP or other location where it can "sniff" traffic on a LAN segment to look for email messages in transit.

60. My family gives me grief about this too.
I don't think the BFEE worries too much about message boards as long as you don't make threats or become a threat. For instance if you write a best selling book that exposes crooked deals and murders for hire, you definitely are going to come under the magnifying glass. Speculating about the possibility without proof is only going to make them uncomfortable.

Yes, i believe this site is monitored...the system in existence has red flagged words and phrases..so a whole post may not be monitored..but i am sure that all of us have typed one or more of the flag words in our posts. Also, it only takes one person to alert the authorities that they have seen you post what might be anti govt or suspicious posts...and your name will be flagged..and then you will be more closely watched. Given that...there is not much u can do about it except..hope for the best..or give up you choice to continue to have free speech.

84. looks like the "Campaign of Fear" is working on your hubby
bush* has been waging a campaign of fear -- mostly to scare people into keeping their mouths shut

supposedly we invaded Iraq to "free" the Iraqi people from such "fear" - shouldn't we also expect to be able to live in a country where speaking out is no supressed?

If we live in a country where freedom and liberty is "valued" -- then there is something seriously wrong when people are afraid to speak out

Tell your hubby - if we don't speak out, express our views and opionions, defend our "freedoms" -- then who will? Does he really want to live in a place where "fear" of reprisals determines what you can and can not say? Who will invade us to give us our "freedoms"

88. The Bill of Rights is great for hanging in the window
I did that when the US first invaded Iraq. Along with signage that the current regime would not be thrilled with.

Conversations about movies, books, and role playing games are loads of fun for agents everywhere. Number One at the box office for a few weeks is National Treasure. It's about stealing the Declaration of Independence. I'm sure no one ever discusses the plot holes in movies over dinner afterwards.

This is still a free country and the Bill of Rights still applies. I intend to keep it that way by speaking up and holding my head high.

I see that you intend to do the same thing. Hold your head high and bow to no one, especially to that dimmest of dictator wanna-bes.
