How can we bait the "Christian" right?
I am talking about making them show their true colors. I know that it will happen eventually but I wouldn't mind hastening the process. How do we do it? In a way that does not compromise us. This is how we beat them. Bait them into showing themselves for what they are.

I put quotes around the word Christian because there is nothing christian about them.

7. Not sure, but it needs to be done.
The Dominionists/Christian Reconstructionists/whatever are at the heart of the politicization of religion noted in recent decades. Their agenda would horrify most people. Especially most Christians--even the more Fundamentalist / Evangelistic ones.

Here's a good site. This stuff does need more publicity.

8. I think we really need to get the word out
about Rev. Moon's ties to the leadership of the Christian Right. Many of these so-called moral watchdog groups are funded with a lot of money from the Unification Church. There is absolutely no way to whitewash Moon's claim that he himself is the true Messiah and that Jesus was a failure.

9. By showing respect for the things you do agree with them on.
I just find it's easier to persuade someone when you're more like "I really do like _____ about your beliefs, but then I can't see how you'd support _____ in light of that." Doing things like telling them how you think they think is the fastest way to discredit yourself - they're the first to know you're wrong, and the first to be an interested party in disregarding your rhetoric.

10. A friend of mine has turned this into a hobby....
He's always telling me about his right-wing "Christian" co-workers that turn around buy porno on the weekends. The conversation is usually something like this:

So you like watching women have sex in movies?
Yeah!
So you like watching lesbians in movies?
Yeah!
So you like watching lesbians have sex with each other, but you don't think they should be able to get married?

The best thing to do is to beat them at their own game: this friend of mine is an ex-Sunday school teacher and knows the bible back to front. He says its hilarious to see how little these people know about whats in it.
Push the things in the Bible about stewardship, community, things like that. It will start making them really uncomfortable to feel like they disagree with most of what's in the Bible.

11. After seeing Donahue's display on Hardball this week
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 01:33 PM by eleny
...I don't think they need any provocation. And this isn't some sarcastic response to your question. I mean it sincerely. A month before Donahue (Catholic League guy) showing his butt, Falwell was on a program discussing Iraq with Jesse Jackson and said something like - if we have to kill all the Iraqis, then that's what we should do to save them. I know that's a wildly loose paraphrase. But whatever the direct quote is, it was pretty bad.

So, I say that they just be allowed free reign to show their asses. Given any air time, they seem to do that with very little provocation except to be introduced and allowed to voice their opinions which don't sound mainstream at all.

This seems to work in private conversations as well. Often if you just ask people on the right how they feel about this or that, given enough time they reveal their homophobia, narrow minded attitudes. Letting their words hang in the air to stink up the joint is an interesting exercise. Just standing their blinking with a questioning look on my face with my head leaning to one side has been very effective.

12. It will happen naturally...I see signs of their impatient indignation....
...already.
I think many fundie groups consider themselves the sole reason for Buxh retaining his office.

Now we hear their demands to the white house for the payback....of course now that the election is over the administration is back to making billionaires out of millionaires.

The fundies will grow desparate in time and resort to extreme measures for attention.

14. Call them hypocrites
realize that not all Christians are hypocrites, but a few I have met use the Jesus talks as a reason to vote for someone who will lower their taxes. Or read the Bible and use their own words against them. They like to quote eye for an eye passages, but in Matthew Jesus himself refutes this. It's a very good book. Fight fire with fire. If they refute something you say that is from scripture they are refuting God and they won't do it. They like to perverse the word of God for their own gain.

16. "christian" right
the best thing to do may be to embrace the "spiritual Left" Many voters seek to vote on the basis of some transcendant values. unfortunately, the Right recognized this and has preyed on this tendency. However, this does not have to be the case as there is indeed a strong and vibrant spiritual tradition in the US that promotes liberal values vigorously. unfortunately, many inside the Beltway democrats cringe from being associated with any liberal of strong conviction, this include many spiritually inclined liberals.

The Democratic party needs to do what the GOP did back in the early 90s and late 80s: recognize that many of its grassroots activists are motivated by transcendant values.

Now the values motivating the spiritual Left are very different from those motivating the relgious right. The most glaring difference is that the spiritual Left is not completely dominated by Christians. It includes many people who are Jewish, Muslim, Wiccan, pagan, and other spiritual paths. Many call themselves "spiritual, but not religious." That is why it is best to refer to it as the "spiritual Left" rather than the "religious Left."

A spiritual Left can bring the Democratic party back into the values debate while simultaneously contrasting the harsh values of the religious right with the tolerance and openness of the spiritual Left.

21. Spot on!
Baiting them and antagonizing them just makes the situation worse. Find a way to include them and your in. Just a small 10% shift could do in the Republicans.

But no to many Dem's are just to concerned with trashing them. It's kinda like "Pot meet kettle", makes you guilty of some of their own nasty behavior.

17. I have asked the local christians here in
South Mississippi what their basis against homosexuals is. Most point to Leviticus. I ask them why they are not urging a constitutional amendment banning working on the Sabbath since that caveat can also be found in Leviticus? Bumble stumble no answer given but I asked one fine upstanding member of the community if this was a legitimate argument that Christian Conservatives are hypocrites. No way - "you can't get Aids by working on the Sabbath." I got a copy of the bible for $1.00 at Dollar Tree. I'm earmarking Leviticus and other passages. You know the bible allows for owning slaves. They are worthless fucking scum of the earth who will be quite surprised and terribly disappointed when they go knocking on the pearly gates. Lets everybody read up on their "Constitution" and ask why they are not complying to the letter. They only pick and choose to placate their hate.

Thanks for the great question "CD05."

18. point out that they are the modern Pharisees and Saducees
attempting to enforce the letter of the law against others without being willing to listen to what Jesus is actually saying.

tell them that Jesus said three things....all three of which highlight the problem with their thinking (referring to so-called religious right here, not real christians)

When Jesus was asked what were the greatest commandments, Christ said "love the Lord your God with all your soul and all your mind and all your strength...and the second is like unto it: Love your neighbor as yourself"

and Christ said "Judge not that you be not judged".

on those three things should christianity be based:
1. Love the Lord
2. Love your neighbor
3. Judge not.

all those three are NOT followed by the religious right, who prefer to
1. think they are MORE suited to run the world than God
2. are intolerant of their neighbor
3. Do nothing BUT judge.

further, there is no reason for any christian, at any time to EVER justify war.
none. Never. It can never be justified. Even against an evil despot, God said : Vengeance is MINE, saith the Lord *I* will repay.

31. Right on
If we out holy them they will probably go postal and start shooting full of some misdirected (self)righteous rage.

The best way to bait them is to do what pisses them off the most, and that would be, exist.

The first reply in this thread reminds me of a short-lived thread I started a week or so ago:

Topic: Jesus has returned!!!
Message: Unfortunately he returned as a black homosexual and was immediately recrucified by the christian right...
