I can't believe I live among these people. Aren't democratic principles supposedly one of the things we're fighting for in Iraq?

38. Sad thing is, these people still believe Muslims had something to do
with 9/11. I think it was perpetrated by these neocon/PNACers. I believe Osama bin Forgotten is a paid boogyman by the Chimp administration. 9/11 really had nothing to do with the muslims. These neocons executed 9/11, paying bin Forgotten, to create a facade that muslims are the enemy when it was just always been about getting the black gold in the Middle East.

5. I thought that we were past that
In school when we learned about the Japanese internment during WWII, the teacher and everyone agreed that it was a horrible thing. The U.S. government even paid the victims of this. Now Americans want to do this to other Americans just because they are Muslims. This is a serious problem.

What do you have to say now, freepers? Is this the country you want to leave to your children? You got Bush and forestalled economic justice (or socialism, or whatever you want to call it), but in exchange you sacrificed all of your (our) precious civil liberties?

Was it worth it?

23. You may be right.
Their position may be this:

"You ain't a real Murkin unless you're white and protestant. And if you ain't a real Murkin, you ain't got no civil rights."

It amazes me that some can't see the hypocrisy of such a position. Ultimately, all of us who are not Native Americans are immigrants in this land.

12. Constitutionally, and in respects to Civil Rights that
is like cutting other people's noses off to spite your face.

These people cannot see the "... and then they came for me and it was too late" implications? These are hysterical ideas that many people often live to regret.

Any support for ideas like that run counter to the true spirit of America and its Founding Principles and later evolutions of the idea of liberty.

With all certainty I can predict that, once you start picking out unfavored groups, (thanks to our incompetent Administration and the mass media) you get the "witch hunt" effect.

If that kind of ignorant, bigoted sentiment is allowed to flourish in a diverse country such as this, then it will open a potential floodgate of prejudice and eventual persecution. It is insane and ridiculous that we are even seeing suggestions that smack of implied, ethnic cleansing.

Seriously! WTF is happening to this county?
I work and have worked with a number of Muslims over my life and they are the some of the kindest people I know. I can't honestly believe I grew up in the same country as those 44%'ers.

The only comforting thing in this article is:

"also found that Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more apt to support curtailing Muslims' civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious."

16. This says it all.....
" Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more apt to support curtailing Muslims' civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious."

It's the conservatives and the fundamentalists who want to destroy our country and take away our freedom. They want to force every one to live and believe as they do. It's not the Muslims we have to fear it's these pathetic , bigoted, hate filled, bible thumping, fascists.

We liberals, are once again shown to be morally, ethically and intellectually superior to the conservatives.

Looking at the numbers, we only outnumber them by 4%. This is a dangerous time indeed for democracy. This kind of crap may not bear fruit in the next four years, but I think the next generation will bear the full brunt of this.

29. I suspect that they out number us.
I suspect that there are many who feel this way but won't admit it. I suspect that it's much closer then most of us believe. If there is another attack on US soil we will see the America Muslim community rounded up and put into camps. We will see internment without charges and with out lawyers.

You are right, we live in very dangerous times. We have to stop the right wing fundamentalists. In the event of another attack they would have no qualms about slaughtering the entire Muslim population. If you don't believe me go to the freeper site and do a search on 'Pinochet' and see how they justified the slaughter of thousands of people because they had a differing political opinion.

39. This whole week
I've been doing research on countries that had genocides. It is amazing how quickly a society can turn from one with racial/ethnic/or political tension to a society where radio stations promote the outright killing of others. I really do not want to believe that America is capable of this, but I fear this dark potential exists in all of us, given the right circumstances.

27. Karl Rove, I Hope You Are Proud Of What You Have Done to America.
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 08:50 PM by David Zephyr
Yep, Mr. Rove, you have turned American against American. Your hero, Niccolo Machiavelli, would be proud of his pupil.

Mr. Rove, you certainly went further than even your old business partner, Lee Atwater, could or would have in pitting our countrymen against each other, in fanning the fires of bigotry and hatred, in subverting the once good nature of the American people into one of fear and suspicion.

Congratulations, Mr. Rove, but I know that in your dark and jealous heart you still wish you had won a real landslide for your client, George W. Bush. Yes, Mr. Rove, the word "landslide" evades you, doesn't it? Landslides like those won by Roosevelt, Johnson and even Nixon and Reagan.

But with all respect, Mr. Rove, any "genius" (as you love to hear yourself called) would know that one can never increase anything by division...and division is the one thing you certainly learned well in the third and fourth grade. I must give you that.

Think about it, Mr. Rove: Forty-four percent of Americans want to "limit" the civil liberties of Muslim-Americans. That would be a good wedge issue for you in the mid-terms for your corporate whores in the House and Senate who operate under the eupehemism of Republican Congressmen.

Yes, Mr. Rove, you truly did so well with having Mr. Bush call for limiting the civil liberties of gay and lesbian American citizens, that perhaps this 44% number will give you something to work with over the next two years before the mid-terms. Oh, I'm sorry, Mr. Rove...you've already thought of that. I'm sorry, but of course, I should have known that.

The media should not have the first amendment right, no corporation
should.. only individuals. That was how it was written, and this
distortion of corporate personhood is making a disaster of

I had in college. Many were from Iran and when they went to grad school, they were caught over here when Khomeini took over. They decided to stay here and they became citizens. I wonder if I should find them and check on them to see if they are alright through all this current hysteria since the attacks.

35. WW1
I just finished reading chapter 14 on WW1 in The People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn. The climate of Govt. and Corp. oppression in the year before the U.S. got into the war is proof that the U.S. can become Fascist rather quickly. For those who have not read this, please do. You will know that what is happening now is not so new.

42. Profiling Muslims
This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Anytime I have a conversation with someone who supports profiling Muslims because of 9/11, I ask them this simple question:

Did you see the United States rushing to profile white men with crewcut hairstyles after Tim McVeigh bombed the building in Oklahoma City?

Where was the call for profling people like McVeigh after he committed his atrocities?

If you didn't support that, then how can you support profiling Muslims?
