From Bill Moyers this evening...
"...News is what powerful people want to keep hidden; everything else is just publicity."

Says it all, I think.

4. A few comments
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 09:56 PM by GreatAuntK
Some of the media are trying to get certain people elected, so it means people don't have access to the info they need as if we didn't know.

No one has done more to keep alive the link between Saddam and 9-11 than Murdoch. Fox News now claims more viewers than any of its rivals. Not me.

Zell Miller joining the "illustrious" team. Last week Fox made deal with Clear Channel to carry its news on CC. ABC/Disney signed Hannity to a $25 million deal. Yuk.

7. Another snippet from Moyers.....
"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.... but everyone is NOT entitled to their own FACTS." ---Daniel Patrick Moynahan

That simple statement lays bare the FOX/Murdoch machine for the right wing propaganda cesspool that it is.

5. Paraphrasing
Moyers disagrees that journalism is all opinion. Moyers: Moynahan said all of us are entitled to our own opinion, but not our own facts.

David Brach, the Repub noise machine, no issue can be decided if journalism walks in lockstep with a one-party state.

ACLU's Anthony Romero is on - O'Reilly has accused him of promoting a radical agenda. But they defended Rush's medical records rights. When you defend the rights of everyone you have to take some unpopular causes, he said.

Moyer: People are making concessions on freedom because of the age of terror and homeland security.

Romero: This is unlike any war we've fought before. We did inter Japanese. But the question is how do we want to live in America - we want to make sure those concerns are equal in value to freedom.

Moyer: If you had to decide the decisive margin, it would be persons who were willing to compromise on the issue of freedom for security.

Romero: Many have not been asked if they would give up their OWN freedom for security. The Faustian bargain. If we were able to talk about library records, financial records, employment records.

Ashcroft called librarians hysterical.

Moyer: Has govt. used that power?

Romero: We know of one or two instances, even though Asscroft said they have never tried. The question is why are those powers there.

6. More...
Many members of congress didn't even read the Patriot Act. There was an effort to stand behind the president at that time, refused to kick the tires on core values.

No one argues the need with sharing info across the agencies. You want to do it in a way that doesn't do an end run on 1st amendment, core American values. Make sure you share info in a way that doesn't abuse those principles.

Govt. can access individuals' computer info without any judge's approval.

FBI says they only do that by following Justice Dept guidelines.

They argue that they can go directly and monitor and surveil people doing nothing wrong but expressing an opposing view. They subpoenaed a group that was against the group, asked them members, financial records - no connection with terrorism, they just wanted to know what they were doing.

Another example in Denver - police turning over info on Amnesty Int, law-abiding groups, to the FBI and Terrorism Task Force.

The problem is the FBI should be focusing on those individuals where there is serious link to terrorism.

8. New topic - intelligent design teaching
We're seeing communities rallying around Christian beliefs, and considering those who are not as parriahs.

Reason ACLU would not want the school teaching I.D. is when you allow the govt. to come into your church and tell you waht to teach, pull the purse strings, your church has less independence. You want to keep the govt. away from efforts to community members to express their religions.

9. Most American people are fair-minded
Romero is an optimist. Elected officials can sometimes use fear and war-mongering to pull back those core values. No kidding.

American people are clouded by a govt. that puts out wrong info, hides info, siezes power with impugnity and does not hold itself accountable.

10. It's hard, but not impossible, t o win against the RW media machine.
It will take courage, persistence, and money. We should never stoop to their low morals on truth and decency. But without doing so, it looks pretty hopeless. Maybe they will self-destruct.

16. I especially liked the interview with Viguerie
He was surprisingly candid. Makes you wonder if he was disclosing EVERYthing.

Depends how much of a slimeball you think he is, I guess. If he really believes the line he spews, maybe he thinks that way. If not, he's being more secretive, and probably trying to mislead.

25. I loved this part at the end ...
Moyers said, "The news is what powerful people want to keep hidden."

I had to let that sink in for a minute, but once I did, I couldn't agree more. It explains why Fox News is not news but, rather, propaganda. Propaganda shows you what the powerful people want you to see. Real news shows you what the powerful people don't want you to see.

I posted this in another thread as well. Sorry for the cross-post. It merely strikes me as very significant and useful.

26. Hitler reference
Check the transcript when it becomes available. On tonight's show Moyers compared the Bush Regime to Hitler. It was in the beginning of the show and he phrased it as only Moyers can.
