I have a MISSION for democratic underground if you choose to accept it
It is time to teach the fundies a lesson in putting up nativity scenes. First lesson is instead of fighting them in court play their own game. This is how we achieve our goal.

Everywhere that you see the fundies trying to put up a nativity scene put one up of your own. We are about to make a special nativity scene replacing the three wise men with three gay men. Dress baby Jesus up in pink and then put GAY PRIDE on him. This is how we beat the fundies at their own games. I'm sure you get the picture and can be just as creative in this mission. Have fun and know the fundies will be wishing they never pulled this stunt.

She has no problem with other groups getting their own displays.

"When it's their birthday, I think they have a right to do the same as we do," Pittman said. "If wiccans can figure out when it's their savior's birthday, they can do the same."

And if the Nativity scene is forced to be dismantled?

"That's between them and the Lord," Pittman said. "If in their hearts they think they can do that, then that's between them and God."

1. That is a really dumb idea....
Dress Baby Jesus in Pink and put GAY PRIDE on him??

I'm gay but I think that would offend a lot more people than just fundies. A better idea would be to complain to the proper authorities that nativity scenes are being put on public property.

That's what I said. It would be very counter-productive.

3. I agree... Bad idea...
Making a mockery of the nativity will backfire big time. If you really want to prove a point here, request that the offending city property ALSO put up an altar to the horned/male wiccan god, who is considered strongest at the winter solstice (Dec. 21). They'll associate it with devil worship, of course, but that doesn't matter. You won't offend "their religion" but you WILL prove a point: that if one religion gets to put up their religious stuff, so do any other religions. Once they grasp that concept, they will be more supportive of the true meaning of "separatation of church and state". Don't want to go Wiccan? Do Hindu. Whatever. Pick whatever is best to make the point. I think wiccan would, just because of christian scruples against witchcraft.

But if you do the gay pride nativity, you will soon find Falwell and Bill O'Reilly using your effort to feed their moronic moral crusade. You cannot play on their turf or you will lose. Be smart, not reactionary.

4. It's a bad idea. Putting up other religious symbols from non-Christian
religions would be smarter.

7. Ummm....don't a lot of places do that?
I'm pretty sure schools do, not overly sure, but I've seen a lot of Jewish stuff out too. As well as Kwanza.

5. This reminds me of propaganda against "Happy Holidays"
The far right wingers are throwing a fit over people saying "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas".

Don't these less than rocket scientists realize that saying Happy Holidays is the same as saying "Happy Holy Days" and is inclusive of all relgions?

Christ was inclusive of all.

6. I guess if you want to upset someone that would work but..

it seems that mocking a religion won't win ANYONE over, at least that is how it might be taken.

Set up a display representing all the other religions of the world or something. Better yet, IMO, just forget about it.

9. I think it is a great idea...
Who's to say that the wise men and Jesus were not gay? There are a lot of gay Christians in this U.S. of A. and they have has much right to interpret the nativity as anyone else. I'm old enough to remember when black nativity scenes and black Santas were a political response to opression. Get over it.

10. OK, I do understand your point
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 11:29 PM by G_j
yes, any one of the people in the scene could have been gay.
That is a legitmate point.

edit: I think if you consider yourself a Christian it would 'feel' the most sincere..
