3. Gore in 1992. I liked him better than Clinton |
|
And during the primaries I was hoping he'd win the nomination

Though I probably would have been too young to remember much of his 8 years. ( I consider it a blessing not to remember that much of the Nixon era)
Howard Dean, of course. Kucinich as well, though that's not likely as long as there's such a thing as television. Wellstone, if only..... :(

|
definitely!!!!!
John Kerry of course, duh...
and Hey: Frank Church!!!!!!!!!!
I was disappointed that Ted Kennedy did not get to run as the nominee somewhere in there, but in retrospect I firmly believe he has been in the exact place he needed to be all along. Besides, I always feared that if he were the nominee or elected, some wingnut would kill him.
May he live long and continue to serve our interests in the US SENATE until he is 103!!!
Humphrey was once described as the"finest man who never became president"
Gore and Kerry could probably tie as the most qualified never to be elected president...except maybe Henry Clay....but that was a long time ago.

--he had a reputation for answering questions straightforwardly and without spin. That is such an anomaly that it inspires support just by itself. The only other thing I remember is the 50 cents/gallon gas tax proposal.

20. Robert Kennedy, Henry Clay, William Jennings Bryan, Howard Dean |
|
Robert Kennedy - Bobby Kennedy would have been one of the great presidents of the 20th Century. He would have gotten us out of Vietnam, fought for the poor, and spread peace abroad. Robert Kennedy could have united a nation deeply divided and in the middle of a culture war.
Henry Clay - A fellow Kentuckian who would have been remembered as one of the great presidents had he been elected. He was a staunch opponent of slavery (though he did own slaves). He possibly could have averted the Civil War, but the Whigs made the stupid-ass move of nominating both William Henry Harrison, who died and left the reigns to the 'states rights' Southerner John Tyler... and later nominating Zachary Taylor, who had zero political experience. Harrison, Tyler, and Taylor were all terrible presidents (granted Harrison was only presidnet for 33 days) and only made conditions worse for the Union, thus speeding up the Civil War. Had the Whigs nominated Clay instead of Harrison and later Taylor, the Civil War may have never happened and the Whig party would probably still be around.
William Jennings Bryan - A hardcore Populist and a proponent of free silver. His economic policies would have took money out of the hands of rich people and put it into the hands of the working poor.
Howard Dean - Howard Dean was destroyed by the 'left-wing' media. He could have gotten us universal health care, he could have balanced the budget, and he could have made this nation respected again. I admire him because he changed the dynamic of the debate over Iraq and gave the Democratic party its spine back. Howard Dean stood up for progressive ideals and would have been a great president.
