1. gaaaaah! why am I not surprised, (my mom's a freeper, and we
haven't spoken since Thanksgiving when I expressed my surprise and dismay at her choice to get her cat declawed. she used to be strongly against declawing but since she moved in with her redneck freeper boyfriend she's completely lost her spine. poor kitty, and to make matters worse, now he goes outside-and they live in the country!

*why do I suspect that the cat scratched *, cats have a wise sense of character about people.

4. I read that Ernie, the other cat was palmed off onto some * supporter as
he wasn't declawed and the Bushes were afraid he'd claw the furniture. I wonder if the "Cat Giving The Finger" picture showed what he REALLY thought of *.

2. We had our cat declawed.
Wasn't my choice, but at least she's not scratching up the furniture, and drapes and such like she used to.

3. Our kitty's going to the vet on Saturday , but no worries, it is just for
a "Kitty 'Flu" or CRVP or whatever shot, and *NOT* for having him DECLAWED.

He is a shelter adoptee, and I highly doubt the SPCA's would ever even think of letting people have the kittens or cats they adopt out be declawed.

5. Declawing is horrible
My mom used to work at a vet clinic... she said after the surgery the cats were so traumatized they wouldn't let anyone near them. It's basicly the same as cutting your fingers off at the first knuckle.

6. And it is illegal in many, if not all, European countries....
it's considered as extreme animal abuse in England.

19. Not that I know of.
I know people that have their cats declawed. That doesn't necessarily mean that they did it in CA though.

23. I believe a city like Santa Barbara or Santa Cruz outlawed it
but I can't remember. Guess its time to Google it to find out for sure.

15. Ummm....some cats WITH claws bite...
there's no causal relation between being declawed and biting....

I felt guilty for putting my kitty through a surgery that she needed so that she wouldn't die. How can someone live with them self after declawing their baby?

17. Given a choice...
between declawing a cat or letting a cat die, which is more inhumane?

I've got quasi-ferals in the house. If they had front claws, they'd have to be outside cats, and they'd already be dead now (when was the last time you heard of a feral living for 9 years outdoors?). We tried the glue-on things, and the cats ripped them off with their teeth in days.

Ours are no worse for wear after being declawed in the front. It sucked for a week, but it doesn't bother them now. And their quality of life is much better because of it.

18. There are always gray areas with ethics.
You know your babies the best. Mine was a feral too, but she was young when I got her and she is mellowing with age(6 years).

11. All you have to do is buy Soft Claws and put them on...
Edited on Sat Dec-18-04 04:35 AM by Maddy McCall
Or have the vet put them on....and then you just put new ones on when the old ones grow out.

13. Interesting
But, my cat is a ninja so there's no way in hell I could get those on him, luckily, he doesn't claw things up. Speaking of cats... mine just puked on the carpet... nice.

12. Hm. You either love your cats or you love your furniture.
Declawing sounds terrible. They were created with claws just as horses were created with tactile hairs and hairs sticking out of their ears. If you cant deal with that don't keep them.

I always shudder when I see pictures of American horses with their tactile hairs removed. In Europe that's forbidden thank God because it's considered to be grave cruelty to animals. They need their hairs/claws/whatever and furthermore getting rid of them violates their dignity.

21. I had a couple of cats declawed, as a last resort
this cat absolutely would not stop slapping me across the back of the legs with all her claws out ..and drawing blood. She was also hell on the woodwork in our house.

We were getting ready to move to Texas and since we knew we would be renting, we figured it would be easier to convince a landlord that we could keep her if she were declawed. Her companion kitty was declawed too as we felt it was best if both were declawed.

Well, she never appeared to suffer at all, other than sore toes for about 2 days. The most amazing thing was that she changed her personality from a rather spiteful little bitch to sweet kitty. She still slapped me on the leg, but because it did not draw blood and shred my nylons, I did not yell at her..and we figured out she was trying to get us to play tag with her. She also was the absolute Alpha Cat in our house until she died of old age at 17. Even as an old lady, toothless, no front claws and woefully smaller than her housemates, one look was all it took for the other kitties to skulk off to another room

Scamp, in loving memory

None of my current cats are declawed, nor will I do it again unless I feel I have no choice. (Well, I had to have one claw removed from my 6 toed kitty because the extra claw got infected, and to tell you the truth, I can't tell that anything was removed other than the nail root..Scamp never looked like her knuckles were removed either....)

22. Cats are obviously...
Cats are creatures of great intelligence, impeccable taste and are excellent judges of character....

George was likely tired of his hands being bitten and scratched.
