There really were lobotomies performed with ice picks 50 years ago! This site provides a good history of lobotomies. It describes what exactly is done in the procedure. It also includes fascinating (but disturbing) case studies of people who have received them.

The procedure on the brain was invented to treat mental illness, but it had the effect of turning people into zombies. People lose their colorful personalities and become bland, unmotivated, and uninspired. They have a no-care attitude. They are, however, still highly functional in their jobs and lives, and if you were to run into one, you'd probably never know it.

It makes you wonder about the human brain. What is the function of that part of the brain that is destroyed?

People were reckless about that procedure during that era because they didn't know anything about it, and medical ethics aren't what they are now. The ice pick lobotomy was a crude procedure, but it was quick and clean. There were stories of parents dragging their kids to have one because they were rebellious. It's sad. They didn't know any better.
