1. You posted prematurely. At the end they scolded Dems for..
making fun of red staters for believing in God.

9. Why is that wrong?
I think the point is that the red states have a lot of stupid people in them - BUT that not all of them are idiots.

I believe in God.

I liked the skit from hilarious beginning to meaningful end... including the part where they give liberal gifts to children in the red states. ;)

That's why I said red America and not red states. We have members of red America in Massachusets too.

15. He found out on
the Drudge Report that Santa wasn't giving gifts to the red states, so he decided to be santa. then his sleigh broke and crashed, and he woke up. the whole thing was a drug induced dream and he was on the bathroom floor drooling with pills everywhere.

16. Honestly
I think they were just trying to cover their tracks and appear "fair and balanced." Any time you take that many pot shots at the rightwingers, you have to protect yourself a little. Plus, it seemed a little contrived and disingenuous

18. in my opinion, it was about how pointless the whole red/blue thing is
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 12:45 AM by Syrinx
Good and bad people everywhere. The red/blue excercise is meant to divide.

Just because pretentious Franken quotes some stupid survey that says "red" people are 3% more racist don't mean shit.

I can't believe so many people at DU, of all places, are so prejudiced that they take a couple laugh-lines and think their prejudices have been vindicated. They need to pay a little closer attention to the 'toon in my opinion. Or ignore it, as they desire.

BTW, I thought the cartoon was hilarious. It's just that it was more "balanced" than many think. Because they're not thinking.

34. And where did being non-vindictive ever get the Democrats?
Being non-vindictive got the Democrats a one-way ticket back home in the elections.
Being vindictive, mean, nasty, vulgur and dishonest got the Republicans the White House and increased their majority in Congress.

19. I thought that for a second too...
The section of Santa guffawing about Jesus being "imaginary"...

But notice how the liberal characters *realized* they were not being inclusive and did in fact help deliver presents to the red states, albeit stuff they probably wouldn't like anyway!

That's why we're better and why we're often taken advantage of; We can put ourselves in someone else's shoes and err on the side of cutting people slack. With the Limbaugh thing they were *certainly* playing for us.

20. Give right-wingers "The Best of The O'Franken Factor" as a gift?
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 12:48 AM by high density
Or was it telling us to not make fun of right-wingers as they piss on us and destroy the country?

To be quite honest, I couldn't figure it out. It was very funny, though.

22. I got it
The point was not to label people.

And, by labeling the red states as "stupid," and that loving God is somehow "idiotic," then the Dems are being no better than the Repubs.

I still liked the whole cartoon.

Funny, entertaining and had a message. And a good message, at that.

24. too little too late
There was mountains of material BEFORE the election, but apparently they were too timid, and chose the "middle of the road"..

Of course now that it's over, they can once again afford to be irreverent.

SNL has been kind of lame for too many years to count..But then I saw the first show they did and was a regular viewer back when they were cutting edge and funny ..

27. I agree
Excepting the news. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are smart and funny, much smarter and funnier than anybody since the original cast. Tonight's show was the first funny one this year, IMHO. The one thing I noticed was that in a couple of sketches they counted on DeNiro being his old sinister self for the joke, and I don't think he can be that person anymore. I don't care much about the politics of the humor, as long as it's funny. Even the loathsome Dennis Miller was funny sometimes when he did the news on SNL. Two points: 1) Humor is neither red nor blue (I sometimes can't control the things I find to be funny), and, 2) No matter what our politics are, we all have foibles and are therefore targets for humor.

30. maybe but
i think they were doing what they could before the election without being too obviously biased. remember, their not a political show, they are trying to appeal to everybody, not too many years ago even i would have been bored by so many political sketchs. they are doing damn good at putting in lots of relavent political humor now, and before the election. it would be more profitable and popular to be doing lame spongebob squarepants ripoffs.

for who they are, their audience, who owns them, etc. i think SNL is doing a fandamntastic job trying to wake people up, without driving them away.

33. I loved the part where Margaret Chao, Moby, Santa, Franken and Natalie...
...Merchant are eating dinner in China Town and Santa's railing on Republicans for not letting Moby marry his boyfriend. Moby says he's not gay. Santa responds, "HO, HO, HO!"

Later, after they all go down the chimney of a blue stater, the little girl asks why Santa isn't going to the red states and Santa says it's because they won't let Moby marry a man. Behind him, Moby puts his head in his hands an shakes it in exasperation.
