Has anyone read "The Prophet" by Thom Hartmann?
Hartmann seems like an awfully interesting, intelligent person. I've read of (not read) some of his other books and put them on my list, but I hadn't realized he had written something like this. Not sure the right would find this an example of acceptable moral values, but I liked it.

<edit>

Then into the great hall came a magnificent-looking man who Herr Muller recognized as the Archangel Michael. Everybody snapped to attention and assembled themselves into long lines, several rows deep and facing him.

‘There is a battle coming on the Earth,' Michael said. ‘It will be fought first on the most subtle of spiritual levels, and then on the coarser levels. I am looking for people who are willing to go to Earth at this time to take on this battle. Most of your work will be invisible, and you will suffer great difficulties. You may be tortured, or nearly put to death. You may often wish for death. But, if you persevere, you will sit with the Son of G-d at the wedding table. On the other hand, if you do not volunteer for this mission, there will be no penalty or punishment and you will be allowed to stay here in heaven and enjoy the life you have. Now, who will choose to volunteer for this?'

Herr Muller looked around and nobody was stepping forward. ‘How can this be?' Her Mueller wondered: there were so many mighty and powerful beings here.

<edit>

After a few moments, everybody had moved back a few yards except Herr Muller, who stood alone at his end of the hall. Down the row, a few hundred yards and so far away he couldn't make out their features, there were other people who hadn't stepped back.

Michael looked at them and his face became filled with love and compassion. ‘I will send you help and I will send you helpers, although they will usually not be obvious. But you will know. And always remember, no matter how terrible it gets, that you are on a mission and your actions, if you are successful, will save humanity.’ Michael paused and looked around, then said, ‘And now I tell you what is your most powerful weapon: to commit tiny acts of compassion.’

As Herr Muller nodded, Michael struck him on the shoulder with his sword. He winced from the blow, and then began to cry and struggle, trying to speak, but unable to: he was now in the body of a newborn baby, Gottfried Johannes Muller, in Germany, in 1913.

2. Hello
I'm so glad you brought up this book, Karmadillo! What serendipity! I've just finished posting on another forum about Thom Hartmann's latest article, "Hyping Terror For Fun, Profit - And Power", at www.commondreams.org/views04/1207-26.htm. I don't think you'll regret it.

Oh, FYI, my name is Jonathan. :)

I'm in the middle of reading The Prophet's Way: Touching the Power of Life (1997) -- I could be wrong, but I think that's the book you're referring to -- so I haven't yet gotten to the part you excerpted. It's amazing so far, though.

I might post something a bit later about Thom Hartmann, but let me just say for now: congratulations on finding him!

Thom also has a radio program whose archives are accessible from the internet (check out www.whiterosesociety.org). And he's been subbing lately for Randi Rhodes on Air America Radio (www.airamericaradio.com).

P.S. Sorry for the makeshift links. I'm new and haven't figured out how to make functional links that actually take you to the website.

3. His writings about Jefferson are wonderful.
His latest is "What Would Jefferson Do?" He has read and studied Jefferson extensively, as well as many other founding fathers, and his interpretations of events are unique and fascinating.

Haven't seen the one you mention - will check it out. Thanks for the tip.

5. I'm on a kick
now of reading just about everything the man has written, except the ADHD books. (I don't know anyone with that problem.) I'm just so impressed with his wisdom and intellect and am so glad to have found his show and books. I used the links on his website to ask local stations to carry his show. He is the perfect antidote to airwaves saturated with Limbaugh and Hannity.

I just finished What Would Jefferson Do? and I think it was fabulous. Every American should read this book to gain a clearer picture of where we've been and the nature of our country's beginnings. I've sent copies of it to several people I know who have been drinking a little too much Kool-Aid.

The spiritual books are great too. I've been trying to practice the small acts of compassion he talks about since I read them. They've been a calming effect on me since the election fiasco.
