Do U.S. military personnel carry passports?
This may sound like a stupid question, but I was just thinking about it and it would certainly make it harder to desert if you were deployed overseas and didn't have a passport. Anybody know what the standard procedure for U.S military personnel to identify themselves in a foreign country while deployed? Also, would they carry passports in a combat area?

1. No they don't...
Their military ID cards serve as the passport.

It use to be they had a green passport, but now they carry blue ones just like everyone else.

3. I did when on AD
My entire unit had our passport photos taken in civvies. We weren't usually deployed together and were not to ID ourselves as military if asked.

4. We weren't allowed to carry them, and ...
we weren't allowed to carry cash. They made sure we couldn't leave.

6. Not always but some do
My husband can't travel outside of his present location without a passport....though he can be here without one. It's because he's stationed here and because the SOFA allows it. We're in Germany.

They don't need one in a combat location.

I had to have one to travel with him.
