1. Hey, Athena sprang out of Zeus' head fully grown!
Immaculate conception? Why not?

But, personally, I think normal conception is a lot more fun. Healthy too! ;)

2. well, let's face it
the image of mary with her heels making happy circles in the air was probably more than the ancients could handle.

3. Ah, methinks, that like many many other people, you misunderstand
just what the "Immaculate conception" is believed to be. It has nothing to do with the conception and birth of Jesus, but does refer to the belief that Mary, mother of Jesus, was born without Original Sin; something that the rest of mankind is not believed to have escaped.

4. Only Catholics believe that.
Protestants believe that Jesus was born without sin, not Mary.

10. Well, yes. But the Immaculate Conception is a Catholic belief, not, I
think a Protestant one.

It's all academic to me anyway. I'm not Catholic or Protestant... Having seen both from the inside and having rejected both.

11. Correct
It is also a pretty new Catholic observance. It was only declared in 1854. So it has only been around a century and a half.

5. I think the Immaculate Conception was about Mary herself.
I forget now. There is a confusion about Jesus being conceieved on Mary by God and therefore she keeps her virginity and the fact that Mary herself was conceived without original sin. So she was supposedly a perfect person even though her parents conceived her the old fashioned way. There is a difference but I can't remember the wording.

6. Protestants believe one, Catholics believe the other.

Protestants think Jesus was born without sin, through Mary (a virgin).

Catholics believe Mary was born without sin, in order to carry God's son.

7. Re.: Immaculate conception.
Yep. I think those who note that the "Immaculate Conception" refers to Mary's conception are correct. My earlier post is a reference to the "Virgin Birth" of Christ. Still ... I couldn't resist the "sex is good" argument.

13. I wonder why Mississippi has one of the highest teen preg. rates around
I know. Surely, abstinence only sex ed. works! That means these unwanted pregnancies are all from God!

12. But the Immaculate Conception is sacred Church doctrine going back to 1850
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 08:08 PM by JVS
How could we challenge this ancient doctrine?

Seriously though, I was watching TV on the commemoration of the Immaculate conception and one Father Pacwa was explaining how important it was. His explanation consisted of the rhetorical question "Can you imagine what it would be like if Mary had been born with original sin?" I really wish he had been able to articulate how horrific that would have been, because I don't see the necessity for it

15. I'm having trouble understanding the point of this thread.
I'm a staunch atheist, but I don't see the point of posting a thread just to mock Christianity.

If someone mocked Islam in the same way you all have, they'd be called bigots. Why, then, do we consider Christian beliefs and Christians to be silly. I'm not talking about people like Jerry Falwell, i mean ordinary folks.

Threads like these are part of the reason we have such a hard time in the South.
