"Half the men go into war without equipment led by men they do not trust."
"..many were unhappy with their jobs, their wives..."
"Happy men do not volunteer"
The same kind of paranoia exists right here in America, today
All revolutions eventually go bad. Just like the American revolution. It went bad about 250 years ago and never recovered.

I was just discussing it the other day at the hair salon. Is this the first time you have seen this movie?

8. Radiantly beautiful Julie |

Not to mention Omar. And Geraldine Chaplin is utterly charming. Siobhan McKenna, Ralph Richardson, Tom Courtney, Alex Guinness, etc etc -- for me, a very nearly perfect movie.
However, I believe the original poster is watching the recent Masterpiece Theatre remake -- which I saw, and found quite wanting after the utter perfection of David Lean's masterpiece. Not sure why they bothered to try, as it brings nothing new or itneresting to the endeavor.

9. I identify, these days, with the character played by Tom Courtenay.... |
|
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 09:44 PM by KoKo01
he was the idealistic Radical as was Zhivago...I used to think of myself as a Zhivago type....until the Supremes installed the first "American Emperor." Then, I understood the Tom Courtenay character. I was very young when I first saw it...the movie has stayed with me. I started the book...but didn't finish it.
If I stay with the movies portrayals of the political movements portrayed by the different actors...then I do see similarities to times coming soon for America. It will be different from post Czarist Russia...but the politics are erie in what could come if we allow it.
The Poets, the Romantic Radicals, the Cynical Apolgists for the Establishment, the Restorationists and the Movement trying to Look Ahead and Move On.... All of it... Bolshevists, Communists, Stalinists, Trotskyites...and more...
