Conservative Christian is scared of the Religious Right
Edited on Mon Dec-20-04 10:16 AM by pberq
A long-time conservative Christian Pastor who has spent years working with the Christian Coalition, and other right-wing groups comes out against the anit-Christian policies of The Bush admin.

<snip>
For one reason, on the whole, the Religious Right has obviously and patently become little more than a propaganda machine for the Republican Party in general and for President G.W. Bush in particular. This is in spite of the fact that both Bush and the Republican Party in Washington, D.C., have routinely ignored and even trampled the very principles which the Religious Right claims to represent.

Therefore, no longer does the Religious Right represent conservative, Christian values. Instead, they represent their own self-serving interests at the expense of those values.

It also appears painfully obvious to me that in order to sit at the king's table, the Religious Right is willing to compromise any principle, no matter how sacred. As such, it has become a hollow movement. Sadly, the Religious Right is now a movement without a cause, except the cause of advancing the Republican Party.

Beyond that, the Religious Right is actively assisting those who would destroy our freedoms. On the whole, the Religious Right comports with those within the Bush administration and within the Republican Party who, in the name of "fighting terrorism," are actually terrorizing constitutional protections of our liberties.

1. Good for him.
We've got quite a few Fundamentalists and/or Evangelicals here in Texas. But most of them would not agree with the beliefs of the Dominionists who have been politicizing religion.

Formerly, the Southern Baptists supported separation of Church & State. They would not tell the government what to do--& would not have to take orders from the Government. This changed about the time the Texas Republicans were taken over by the Religious Right. And Bush rode the movement to success.

2. the fundies are experiencing the second wave of infiltration
into their churches by right-wing fascists. The first was during the turn of the last century, when business interests hired preachers to organize anti-labor sentiments in the churches. The second started in the 1970s along side of the creation of the right-wing foundations, and it's been covered pretty extensively here on DU.

There have been a number of fudies like this guy speaking against it the entire time, but they don't have the big bucks like GOP operatives Falwell, Robertston, etc. have.

They took over the SBC and many of the evangelical and fundamentalist churches, but they really grew when they built "indepedent, non-denominational mega-churches".

3. That was a good find.
There's no question of the "conservatism" of that source. Here's another example from that same website, that probably WON'T be greeted here so well: http://www.covenantnews.com/repent041216.htm

I'm in near despair when I see so many (including some here at DU) say that we need to "shift rightwards" ... NEVER!!! But what we DO need to do, is to cease regarding "the other side" as mortal enemies. In significant ways, they share the same "A Better World For All" ideals that most here do, and it's well worth listening to them with an open mind.

6. Agreed. We have some things in common with this guy.
There is potential for coalition-building here.

In my town, a Baptist minister has been coming to Democratic meetings lately, and he definitely shares most of the same goals.
