but damn...I'm snickering.

Why not just expand "Entertainment Tonight" to a 24/7 forum and call it news? It couldn't be any worse.

Lose the broad brush. Also note what Navy SEALS would be doing now with the proper leadership (it wouldn't include any of their members using torture).

They're supposed to be reporting on them objectively. That's it, no extra commentary needed about how much she likes them.

38. Should she have said that the insurgents rock also?
And do the insurgents rock? They've been pretty successful thus far. Is success at one's mission the criteria that defines "rock-ness"?

So, would it be OK for Couric to state on a newscast that the insurgency rocks?

If you say yes, then you're in essence saying that it's ok for newscasters to spend their on-air time cheering death.

If you say no, it's not OK for her to compliment insurgents, then we get to the crux of the matter. Why isn't it ok for her to compliment insurgents? Because they're on "the other" side? Because they're not American citizens? Because they're the wrong religion? Because their methods are crude? Because Couric and SEALs are Americans, but insurgents aren't?

Katie Couric should be reporting news. She should not be reporting her opinion. It really is just that simple. Objectivity. It's a word that used to hold some meaning.

22. Envelope Please: And the winner is...
John Roberts, Bush-lover extraordinaire!

A sample from FAIR:

ACTIVISM UPDATE:
CBS Acknowledges-- But Doesn't Include-- Bush "Critics" on Social Security

December 17, 2004

On December 13, FAIR issued an action alert, directed at CBS Evening News and CNN's NewsNight, in response to misleading or unbalanced reports on Social Security that aired on December 9. CBS appeared to respond to those criticisms on the December 15 broadcast of CBS Evening News. But the network's admission fell short of actually providing balanced Social Security coverage.

Reporting from Bush's economic summit, CBS correspondent John Roberts continued to stress that Social Security faces an imminent shortfall: "Franklin Roosevelt's Social Security safety net is quickly developing huge financial holes."

Roberts added: "In 2042, Social Security will become insolvent, and today's young workers risk losing their benefits." An on-screen graphic explained that the workers-to-retirees ratio has been declining since the 1930s, with the final entry for the year 2042 reading: "Insolvent = 0 benefits?" That claim is inaccurate; according to the Social Security trustees report, without any changes whatsoever, the program will still be able to pay 73 percent of scheduled benefits in 2042. <more>

CBS has gone Repub!

why would they need to bring in Katie, unless they're getting kickbacks from the barf-bag manufacturers? :-)

If it's a female they're looking for, they've already got Mika Brzezinski, Thalia Assuras, Sharyl Attkisson, Sharyn Alfonsi, and Sheila MacVicar, any one of whom could out-report Katie with one mike tied behind her back.

39. In her defense:
I've watched her, and oftentimes she's the only one on that show willing to actually ask some tougher questions. (Unless it's Michael Moore; then Matt is perfectly willing to savage him.)

The new makeover, which has her looking downright slutty some mornings (40 something women should NOT wear that much gooey lipgloss...) needs to go. But I think there's a very good chance that in a different format she could do a good job. And frankly, I'm thrilled to see a woman's name in contention, instead of more Kens.

Today is supposed to be about comfortable, warm stuff. It's the role she's had for years. That doesn't mean she's not capable of being serious. Although there's not much msm that's serious anymore anyway, is there?
