APO Mail Question
Mrs. Chef went to the post office to mail Christmas cards. The PO has some program where you can by a book of stamps for the trrops in Iraq. When I was in Viet Nam, all we had to do was write the word "Free" in the upper right hand corner of the envelope and the postage was free. My questions are: since we spend $500,000,000,000 a year for the military, isn't their postage free? If so, why do they need stamps? If not, why isn't it?

1. If they are in a combat area, they get free mail
Iraq, Kuwait, former Yugoslavia, still get free mail.

I'm guessing this may go to troops stationed overseas in non-combat areas, like Germany or Korea, who still have to pay postage.

2. My ex-wife was in Iraq last year...
...and she sent some mail to our boys. It had free written where the stamp would have been. Your question is perplexing to say the least.
