9. I don't care for the analogy of Stalin and the others.
So was my beloved Clinton. I take it the freepers were comparing him to Hitler when he had the presidency too. Of course Bush is closer to Stalin and maybe Hitler and Clinton is not.

George W. Bush is only the mask.

Neither the media nor the Democrats have paid nearly enough attention to this man. I had hoped that Time would amend this by recognizing his pivotal role in recent history, but clearly they have missed it too.

Well, it doesn't let me copy the actual votes between Yes and NO only the tally. Must be managed by Diebold!

It is now at:

Yes: 43.5%
No: 56.5%

16. Irony extraordinaire!
Edited on Tue Dec-21-04 05:42 PM by texastoast
I find it bitterly ironic that Time's Canadian "Newsmaker of the Year" became such because Time's Man of the Year endorsed deporting Maher Arar to a third-party country who deals with interrogation by torture.

"Mr. Arar, who has dual citizenship in Syria and Canada, was detained in New York in September 2002 on suspicion of involvement in Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda terrorist network.

"U.S. authorities then deported the telecommunications engineer to Syria.

"The 35-year-old has said he was tortured by Syrian officials in a stark prison cell before being released last year, and denied any involvement in terrorism."

Fuck you, shrubito. And all your little media giants who won't play the story. Go, Pacifica!

17. I look at it this way,
more than 1/2 of all posts here on DU relate to * in one way or another, and we hate him. Like him or not (NOT, in our cases), he is certainly a person who has a great deal of influence on society and culture. This isn't a "humanitarian of the year" or "miss congeniality", there's clearly no requirement that anyone like the guy, and I would have been suprised if he was not at least in the running.

23. Here's my little exchange with the Time editor:
To the Time editor:

By supporting President Bush with your Person of the Year Award, you immerse yourself in the blood of innocent Iraqii's. You take their blood on your hands by supporting this war criminal. G.W. Bush has presided over the deaths of more innocent civilians (over 100,000) than Milosevic and Saddam combined. By honoring him, you share his guilt. You are complicit. Shame on you.

Dear Reader:

We regret your disappointment over the selection of President Bush as TIME's Person of the Year. But perhaps we should remind you of the traditional standard by which the editors make their annual choice. The Person of the Year is not an award or a tribute. The question at the center of the selection process is, Who or what, for better or worse, has affected the way we live today? The answer to that question could be a force for good (for example, Winston Churchill, Man of the Year, 1940; Dwight Eisenhower, 1944) or for evil (Adolf Hitler, Man of the Year, 1939; Ayatullah Khomeini, 1979). And to the latter, President George W. Bush must be added for 2004 -- there is no one else whose agenda and actions in the past year had such universal impact. As managing editor Jim Kelly noted in his Letter From the Editor, Bush has had his highs and lows over the past four years, but in the end he prevailed in the 2004 election by "persuading a majority of voters this time around that he deserved to be in the White House for another four years."

Thank you for writing. We appreciated having the opportunity to respond to your concerns.

Best wishes.

TIME Letters

From me to the Time editor:

In response to your response, where have you been living? Bush did not win the 2004 election. The Republican machine stole it for him, again. Just do an internet search on “election fraud 2004” and you will get thousands of hits. Also, by your criteria you should really get to the source of the current evil. You need to retract Bush and nominate Osama bin Laden as person of the year. You can take your “best wishes” and file them away unless you want to give some real coverage and investigative reporting into the election fraud, tabulation fraud, voter suppression, voter role purging, etc that went on this past election.
