I need some help
What kind of options does a battered spouse have? She just left her abusive husband but she doesn't have a place to stay.... what other options does she have besides the following?

- YMCA - the nearest Y is just a sports club... they don't provide shelter.
- women's shelter - they won't answer their phones.

I am helping someone in need.

1. House of Ruth...see if in phone book or directory assistance.
They provide safe, confidential shelters and help with getting a job.
I had a roommate one time who stayed at one. We made donations there at Christmas of stuff we didn't need anymore (but kept the location top secret, utmost important!)

4. The local police dept
should be able to help her get in touch with a battered women's shelter. They usually don't publish their phone numbers.

5. You could try a church or local charity. It is best if she goes to a
shelter in a different area or town so it is less likely she will be followed. The police or salvation army might have some ideas of places in your area. Try the phone book or internet. Good luck.

6. Where is she?
Some cities and counties have crisis centers where they put up battered spouses and their children. She may have to issue a complaint against the accuser - is she willing to do that?

If there are shelters specifically for victims of abusive S.O's, they may have a phone listing in the directory.

The local St. Vincent de Paul's usually has some sort of women's shelter, as do many other charitable organizations.
Check under "Crisis Centers"; they could also be listed under Family Services or Women's Services.
Your local Red Cross and/or United Way might also have a listing for emergancy purposes, if they're large enough.

Good luck; it's a dangerous situation when the individual leaves an abuser - and unfortunatly, in some areas, the police don't always help.

9. Can you take her in for one night?
Edited on Tue Dec-21-04 10:13 PM by Cleita
I don't know where you are, but the women's shelters in my area are overwhelmed. If that is the case in your area and if you can keep her one night, it will give you a chance to look at your options tomorrow.

Take this VERY seriously.

edited to add ..... tell her to GO there, not just call.

Call first, give a current location and then GO TO THE POLICE NOW.

12. She could also try her doctor's office
...a lot of doctors offices have signs indicating that they are equipped to handle these situations.
