Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and science.
I just finished watching a great show on PBS's "Nova" on "string theory" and it was a wonderful couple of hours that forced you to get your brain in gear and consider other concepts of time, space and dimensions.

Although I am an orthodox agnostic, none of the theories presented precluded the existence of some supreme, intelligent entity.

Yet, Falwell, Robertson, Dobson, and other fanatics of their ilk, would have us burned at the stake for even watching such "elite, liberal propaganda."

If they have their way, we are entering another era of ignorance and superstition. "The dark age of the 21st century?" Jeeez, how history will laugh and pity us.

3. Oh! I'm watching that show now!
It seems really cool, I like it.

You know, and this might be weird, but when I watch shows about this stuff or look at pictures of space and things like that, it always reinforces my thoughts about god... that there isn't one. When I watch shows like this I always think to myself, "how can there be a god?"

I'm sure most other people find the reverse, but thats just me. :)

5. Or one step further...
...If you look at the various religions, I believe more and more, that Christians have got it completely wrong. Especially Evangelicals.
How can they claim to be the only true religion, when so many others like Hinduism and Buddhaism are 1000's of years older? Plus they are so much more dignified.

8. Actually, Buddhism
is not much older than Christianity. About Hinduism you are correct. So, too, is Judaism older than Xianity. In fact one may say that Buddhism is to Hinduism as Xianity is to Judaism. Each arose from its former.

Animism is older than any known religion and is far more respectful of the only God for which there is any evidence - Mother Earth.

11. Got ya, I guess the point I was trying to make...
...is when I see how various religions conduct themselves, what their priorities are, I find those other religions so much more inviting.

To me, it's completely ridiculous that this American version of Christianity, is bullying the rest of the civilized world. We're a country thats 300 years old, telling country's with 5000 years of history and religion that they're "evil-doers"! How insane... Why are so many Americans asleep at the wheel?

12. I knew what you meant,
I was just trying to put all those years studying philosophy to some actual use. Showing off, I guess, in a v minor way.

You ask why so many are asleep. My answer in a word - television.

9. tskui, an orthodox agnostic is...
... well, let's begin with agnostic. An agnostic is someone who neither confirms nor denies the existence of a supreme being. In other words, it's someone who says, "I don't and can't know."

An orthodox agnostic is a term I made up to describe myself. I absolutely stick to my agnostic belief regardless of what I read, watch, or whether a Jehovah's Witness or devil worshiper knocks on my door trying to convince me that I'm misinformed.

Can my convictions be changed? Perhaps. But then, who's to say my convictions are correct?

7. Didn't you know?
God designed the universe with superstrings so he could control us from a distance. Falwell (God, what a name. Sounds like a wish his childhood friends may have had) thinks quantum mechanics are the illegal aliens that repair his car when it runs out of gas and won't start when he falls well to his knees and prays to the One True God bigger than anyone else's, and Einstein was just a going-to-hell-no-matter-what Jew who came up with some dopey thing that's just a theory cuz it never got Word One in the Good Book.

I saw most of the show. Heard most of it before. (Did they talk about the 13 dimensions string theory seems to necessitate?) Fascinating is too mild a word. This is the kind of absolutely amazing no-profit-immediately-apparent science that this administration will continue to refuse to fund. Much of the further evidence will probably come from bigger supercolliders and deep space observation, in which, since we've apparently said adios to the Hubbel, this administration is interested not the slightest.
