By Michael Kranish, Globe Staff | December 18, 2004

WASHINGTON — Nearly 27 million more Americans are slated to pay higher federal income taxes over the next six years as they become subject to a tax provision usually aimed only at the wealthiest Americans, with Massachusetts residents paying at a greater rate than all but four other states, Treasury officials and economists said yesterday.

The provision, called the Alternative Minimum Tax, currently applies to 3 million Americans — most of them earning more than $200,000. But without substantial changes to the formula that determines who is required to pay higher taxes, it will strike 30 million taxpayers by 2010, including many earning less than $100,000, according to calculations by the Treasury Department.

Massachusetts residents will be especially hard hit because the state’s relatively high incomes, and high deductions for state and local taxes will trigger the formula more often than the national average.

The nerve of these assholes. Taxing HARDWORKING AMERICANS even MORE so that their rich buddies can get more tax cuts.

11. This came up in a debate with my republick friend. The AMT was
apparently enacted by Dems to make sure that the wealthy couldn't just loophole their way out of paying taxes altogether. The problem is as time has gone by the reach of the AMT is getting broader and broader. So this is what "they" will say about the tax raise, they'll blame it on dems(In fact grover norquist is already quoted on this very thing along the lines of; fuck 'em it hits Blue States hardest anyway).

The problem for them is this issue has been known for a while and they've had plenty of time to correct it. The thing is "correcting" it is gonna cost a shitload of money, that WE don't have because fucknuts* spent it on a "war to restore his dad's honor and win his own re-selection".

So go ahead and bring it up everywhere just be ready with the defense for "It was a Democratic plan in the first place" with well then what have the republick's done about it since 1994? Where did they spend the money to fix the issue? And, What spending bills has bush* vetoed during his 4 years?

14. You're welcome. Make sure to do alittle background on the AMT and
have all the FACTS to smack 'em over the head with. I always prefer to bring up a potential weak point (such as MY side invented the AMT) and diffuse it before "they" get a chance to use it agin' me. I didn't in this case in my debate so I want to have others prepared. As for norquitter, your ASSessment of him will draw no fire from me!

8. Yes
And they lied about it. Kerry should have just lied and said we will cut everyone's taxes by half and send out those $500 bribery checks.

Truth be damned with the GOP idiots.

10. Funding Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy with a increase on the rest of us.
Taxing the middle class to give to the rich. Tax cuts for the wealthy - taxes and reduction of SS benefits for the bottom 98% of us. I liked Robin Hood's version a lot better.

13. Thats why the rich don't care about taxes
if you set a tax at 300,000 in 2005 saying that your going to tax the top 3% or what ever, then inflation takes over and in 10-15 years more like 30-40% will be making over 300,000. inflation is the greatest and most forgotten about tax on everyone and everything.
