In Latin America, a growing number of women risk estrangement, imprisonment, and even death to seek an abortion

"Latin America has one of the highest abortion rates in the world. And because the procedure is illegal throughout much of the region, the risks are as grave as the statistics are staggering. Each year, it's estimated that over 800,000 women are hospitalized after having botched, backstreet abortions, and another 5,000 die due to complications. Still, an increasing number of women, a majority of then already married with children, are choosing to defy these odds -- not to mention the church and the courts -- to control their own bodies.
