i would not advise flying either of those on a vehicle passing through the former C.S.A. least you meet with an Easy Rider accident.

3. The flag these lovely variations are patterened upon
is not the Stars and Bars, but rather the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. The stars and bars looked different, and you can see it at:

It's a rebel flag for Black Southerners.

11. The Georgia flag
There was all this controversy over Georgia's flag a couple years back because they had the confederate battle flag as part of their flag. The state decided to change it, now it has the Stars & bars flag incorporated into its flag. I think they were going on the notion that not many people would notice.

13. If it's on the flag you posted, I can't find it either....
I see the same stars and bars that are on the American flag, but I don't see anything remotely resembling the confederate battle flag.

Please explain.

18. That was the point
They replaced the Starry Cross pattern which everyone recognizes with the Stars and Bars which Confederate fanciers will still recognize, but others won't. Same Confederate symbol without the controversy.

12. That's the Southern Cross
or the Starry Cross or the ANV Battle Flag. The Stars and Bars is entirely different. Damn Yankees probably don't know grits from hominy either.

15. I'm a "Damn Yankee" and I know grits from hominy!
"Grits" are what my southern-born Dad made once a week.
"Hominy" is the preacher's Sunday message.
:P

(Okay fine, I don't know how hominy is different from grits.)

25. Ahem
I was the first on this thread to note that the BFNV and Stars and Bars are two seperate flags. I'm a Yankee, with a passle of ancetors who wore the Union Blue. I think this specialized knowledge is more likely to be information known by people who have studied Civil War history as I have done all my life.

26. so is "stars and bars" offensive?
In my opinion, a flag, in and of itself, can't be offensive. What it represents or even what it is perceived to represent can be offensive. Since the Confederate battle flag is the one that is associated with the civil war and slavery, is "stars and bars" still offensive?

Honest question.

28. If you stare unblinking at the green one for thirty seconds and
then look away, you'll see an after image of the flag in its proper colors. Actually I think the cross is in white, rather than blue, but anyway, it's a fun optical illusion!
