I can't watch anymore
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 12:19 PM by linazelle
Like a relapsing addict to sweets or liquor, I stay away from the "news" for awhile then, for some reason, I take a "bite" of the toxic substance under the delusion that it might make sense this time. When I hear the same old nonsense, instead of weight gain or hangovers, I get charged up and end up ranting--so bear with me through this brain dump if you can.

This morning, TV's on and I stop to listen for about ten minutes. I a red and yellow icon that reads "The New Iraq" in the upper corner of the screen. (???) Then I hear Katie Couric interview some general Downing from Peoria IL who was an expert at filibustering. Not letting her get many words in edgewise, he rattled off alleged facts about how the infiltrators conducted a suicide bombing; what needs to be done to defend troops against bombings (treat everybody over there suspiciously :eyes:); and that next summer and fall Iraq has other constitutional milestones planned. A cameo of Rumsfeld preceded this "interview" with Rumsfeld stating they don't expect peace after the elections in January (covering BushCo's collective ass basically). The main theme of all of this bullshit is that Iraq is being rebuilt, we are serving a noble purpose over there and Iraq will benefit.

Why don't people even wonder who the fuck gave this "general" enough talking points and information to replace Rumsfeld himself. Why don't they want to know what what makes him an expert? When will people realize that listening to representatives from the Army is the equivalent of listening to the White House that owns them and that they don't deserve respect just because they wear the uniform?

It's a shame that people have succumbed so easily to the machinations of the military industrial complex (MIC). The MIC has created a climate in this country that is like some low-grade fever. People know life is more challenging, they are working two jobs or are unemployed and prices are higher but they don't think they are that sick or incapacitated economically or otherwise because vital info is being withheld in favor of military obsession. The backdrop to most American's lives is the noise of MIC propoganda which they are fed just enough of to tell them what to think but not enough to question.

People like me are at a similar disadvantage because by tuning out we are just as uninformed in many ways. All I know is, I'd rather be uninformed than misinformed--I cannot suspend logic and reason and it pains me thatI must consider doing so. It pains me that I have to wean myself from the toxic media as well.

<RANT OFF>

1. It's not hard to be correctly informed from WH sources.
A. Find the position that is 180 degrees from the stated WH position.

or

B. Assume they are lying unless they are backed up by a minimum of two reputable foreign press sources.

B takes a little more work. I usually go with A.

3. I and may entire family abandoned all but lefty blogs for good
on 11/2/2004. They are always (ALWAYS) either irrelevant or infuriating. I stay quite well informed surfing the net--even informed that their bad behavior continues. Fuck 'em.

4. I know what you mean--still, I have some feelings about
not having a choice in the matter. Not being able to watch TV and get the truth is a huge loss. While I say fuck 'em 95% of the time, that last 5% is what this post is about. It'll take more time to be totally free of my desire to tune into this crap.
