Tucker Carlson calls the term"Happy Holidays" dreaded and meaningless!Vid
http://www.crooksandliars.com/2004/12/23.html#a1140 has the video
Is it me or what or what? We have a president that wants to destroy social security, a Homeland Security nominee who has more question marks than The Riddler, our troops are under siege in Iraq, and these twits are crying about " Happy Holidays"

dreaded: To be in terror of.

When did saying "Happy Holidays" cause such terror in the hearts of republicans?

Is the President an authoritarian liberal now for using the term?

5. Happy Holy Days is dreaded and meaningless?
Tucker is just plain pig ignorant.

Where does he think the word 'holiday' came from?

I'll say "F*ck *ff, Mr. Carlson" :)

I only extend holiday greetings of any sort to those I care about.

LOL on a sidenote, it's cold here & we started 'walking the mall' for exercise =) It was early & the Santa had no visitors, he waved to us and said "Happy Holidays" it made me smile !!!

on edit: I think we should all go to CNN's website & send Tucker a nice Happy Holidays email,,,,

9. when in doubt as to what holidays someone celebrates, seems polite
to be more broad minded in your well wishing. Oh, Tucker Carlson doesn't do broad minded, does he? He doesn't even think beyond the end of his bible belt.

11. Another fine example of how Conservatives create issues
where none exist. To take up the time arguing nonsense so to avoid addressing the embarrassingly meaningful issues.

13. Tucker Carlson also said that the prisoner abuse is not even in the top
five important "reportable" issues in Amerika. But Happy Holidays is.

So using the Carlson formula, when you torture a prisoner, be sure to wish them a Merry Christmas.

14. So he's mad at Bush for saying it?
Or is that one of those things that Bush can say because he's being inclusive and compassionate, but when a "liberal" says it, it's because they hate the baby Jesus?

16. The good thing about the term "Merry Christmas"
Is that after Saturday, they can no longer say it, because Christmas is over.

Has anyone ever wondered why its called a Holiday? Because its a HOLY DAY!

I say say happy holidays to include Christmas and New Year and all the days in between.

In my opinion this is typical RW strategy. Take a totally meaningless topic and elevate it to the most important issues facing the nation, so we wont notice that there now is solid proof that Bush and the rest of the administration authorized torture in violation of US law and could possibly face 20 years in jail.

19. Just Another Manifestation of The Bush Coup D'Etat
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 12:40 PM by TexasLawyer
This "us v. them" repetition is one of the hallmarks of propaganda that supports a coup. There have been some fascinating books written about it, especially the study by Edward Luttwak (info on him is below). Even though Christians are around 90% of the U.S. population, there needs to be a false sense of siege, so that the people can take refuge in the group that will protect Christianity from those bent on destroying it (even though the whole idea of siege is pure fantasy).

Check out:

http://www.lumpen.com/coup2k/framer.html?pg=2

Really fascinating. Here's an excerpt from John Dee's lengthy essay on Luttwak's theories, as those theories played out in the 2000 election:

Through this constant refrain , the Bush campaign sought to create an image of themselves as protectors of these sacred tenets of the nation. This is fully consistent with Luttwak's propaganda strategy:

...Our information campaign...must...reassure the general public by dispelling fears that the coup is inspired by foreign and/or extremist elements, and to persuade particular groups that the coup is not a threat to them. The first aim will be achieved by manipulating national symbols and by asserting our belief in the prevailing pieties....

As Luttwak further explains, marginalizing whatever resistance might oppose the coup is equally important. By the same token, creating a sense of isolation and futility among oppositional elements is vital to prevent any possible unification against the coup.

Luttwak:

One of the landmark studies of the mechanics of coups d'etat was first published in 1968 by Harvard University. Coup d'Etat: A Practical Handbook was written by Edward Luttwak, a conservative scholar with a long career in the national security system. During the Reagan-era, he served as a "consultant" to the National Security Council and the State Department. Currently, Luttwak is senior fellow of "Preventive Diplomacy" at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think-tank with close ties to US intelligence. He is also a member of the National Security Study Group of the Dept. of Defense.
