|
some African American pastor is on the job, putting the Christ back in Christmas. The nuts on The 700 Club were going on about the dreaded attacks on Christmas as well, reminding viewers that they have power at the cash register as well as the ballot box (grrr). They showed that same pastor. The pieces I've seen are all very similar except for O'Reilly, making it about himself and his battle against the forces of darkness.

This is why the Republicans won.
They are able to take a silly wedge issue and beat us over the head with it.
I hope that when we get a new DNC chair our party will be able to recognize these Republican tactics...

this is another non-issue that the wingnut propaganda machine is trying to push. With any luck it will die down as Michael Jackson or Robert Blake goes to trial. Or the next outbreak of urgent Laci Peterson news. The really important stuff.
Or, right around New Year's, when nobody cares any more.
As long as I've been alive, secularizing Christmas has been a constant whine within the churches. But, it always stayed within the churches, and nobody actually cared about what Wal-Mart or Macy's did.
It's not difficult to find a priest or preacher not in the inner circle to talk about keeping "Christ in Christmas," but the thousands of churches in this country generally think it's an internal thing for their members to worry about, and not a thing for the national news.
Where's the outcry over that heathen Dickens not making a big deal out of Jesus when regaling us with tales of greed and ghosts?
And how about those Jews in Hollywood who destroyed our morals and ruined Christianity and Christmas when they gave us "Miracle on 34th Street"?
Everyone, just get a grip.

unless it's about Christ's Golden Rule. They never address that issue. Pre-emptive strikes just don't quite fit Christ's plans and hopes. But you'll never hear a Republican talking about that. You got to wonder who really owns their souls.

In Amerikkka today, Christianity means bombing your neighbor and spending your credit to the limit.
In Amerikkka today, the only worries are that Pagans are stealing Christmas and that gays might be allowed to get married.

We celebrate on Christmas Eve, and we had a blissful, harmonious Christmas -- tree, gifts, carols and all. Very traditional. We even gave gifts to Republican relatives -- whether they deserved them or not. What more could Fox, CNN, etc. ask?

22. FREAKING me out! WAS NEWS TO ME!!!! |
|
I have not watched the "cable news" since election day!
I had no idea at all that Christmas was stolen, or under attack. However, I have come to family for the holidays and they were "discussing it" and then I asked them why they thought that, and they went on and on about PC stuff. Then a bit later I noted on FOX news someone was saying the Christmas was under attack of "stolen"!
Well hell, took me by surprise cause I have been getting Happy Holidays, and SEASON GREETINGS cards from my sister for almost 30 years now. If it was not under attack then, it ain't under attack now.
You won't notice its been messed with at all unless you ask a Fox New reporter, or some piggyback lazy reporter looking for a story in a town where there is no news to be had.
I have come to realize its a 'campaign' by the Falwell groupies and the American Taliban. They are the one's raising heck and writing to all the news media, and FOX is pushing along with the other players.. Hannibal, and Limp-Jaw. All using the same playbook.
Get around a group of RW Fundies, and their Christmas has been stolen, the rest of us are just celebrating the way we always have. Some the 'season' some religiously, some with family traditions, while and some don't celebrate at all but thats not new this year for them either.
Its all propaganda! WE need to publish our own papers locally folks. Time to start local publishing and radio/TV companies and take the media back! Get on satellite now!

|
FOX has nothing else to be victems over since it, FOX news, state run GOP tv has stolen every thing from what was once a democratic country. They now have to steal Christmas and proclaim it as a right wing holiday. Too bad for fox that Christ himself was a liberal.
Hay FOX: CHRIST WAS A LIBERAL
Doing as he said, is not what you do. GOP greed, thugery and pride are things Christ died for so as we do not act on them.

I think it's more the usual attempt to portray themselves as the underdogs (or, as Randi Rhodes put it, "Jesus has become Seabiscuit!"), against The Huge Liberal Establishment That Controls Everything.

28. Dickens would have beaten these hypocrites with Tiny Tim's crutch |
|
Edited on Sun Dec-26-04 03:37 AM by onager
I wonder how many of the GOP faithful read "A Christmas Carol" over the holidays. And how many choked on the plum pudding when they came across this part:
"This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased."
Ignorance and Want are two of the GOP's favorite things, as long as they happen to other people.
Charles Dickens, on the other hand, was a big supporter of London's "Ragged Schools." These were free, charity-funded schools which gave poor children a basic education along with a hefty dose of religious indoctrination.
Like a lot of modern lib'rul atheist troublemakers, Dickens disapproved of the religious part, and wanted the children prepared for real life with a decent secular education. Compulsory, state-funded education finally came in 1870, the year Dickens died.
Compare the reality to the twaddle cranked out by that right-wing "expert on the Victorian Era," Gertrude Himmelfarb. (The mother of GOP propagandist William Kristol.)
According to Gertrude, everyone in Victorian England just sort of mutually agreed to work together and build a great empire. I'm sure that went up for a vote, in which the 9-year-old coal miners and the 10-year-old prostitutes all had an equal voice.

32. Hey Bobbie! Yes, she pretty much does. |
|
Look her up on Amazon. Himmelfarb's Big Idea is "a return to the BEST of the Victorian Era."
That seems to include the following and much more: iron-clad morals established by a rigidly stratified society. Private charity given from the good hearts of the rich. A strong "moral leader." Etc.
Proper academic jargon? Oh, you bet! Like her stable-mate Ann Coulter, Himmelfarb writes with heavy foot-noting, backed up by plenty of facts and figures to "prove" her assumptions.
Here's a pretty objective Amazon review:
Himmelfarb uses her Victorian books as propaganda to show how removed today's "values" are from our ancestor's "virtues."
Her weak link here is in documenting the damage such change has wrecked on our current social scene, although she makes brief references.
Her idealistic take on the Victorians shows them as models of excellence, charitable, hardworking, bonded, intelligent, and responsible, without dwelling on the negative aspects of industrialism, ethnocentrism, or racial and sexual discrimination.
Still, the wealth of facts she has accumulated is invaluable if one does not get caught up in her conservative rantings and broad assumptions. Can we return to the best that the Victorian era offered? Himmelfarb makes it clear that this would be impossible without an organized society and a strong moral leader who could "lay back and think of England!"

at a time when jesus is being served on a platter to make hate/racism/bigotry palatable, i find the statement true on so many levels.
