On the History channel they are talking about Aramegeddon
It will be interesting to see if they place the freeper/fundie point of view or if they do the topic a justice by exploring all ideas.

1. The History Channel's religious shows are usually quite...
non-fundie. Their "End of the world" shows are usually the exception. Be sure to check out their shows on Jesus and the other personalties of the NT. Usually they approach the subject from multiple angles, but predominately the academic one. They're really quite good. They also usually spend quite a bit of time on Gnosticism, which you wouldn't see on fundie shows.

and so far it has been very good and informative.

Their shows on this subject usually are fair and balanced.

Just my opinion.

7. Question: is this a rescheduled program to "fit" the quake?
I don't have cable or subscribe to a TV schedule list. But I am curious about this for obvious reasons. If this program on Armageddon was scheduled before the Indonesian quake hit, then it's just an odd coincidence. But if they had it ready to bump regularly scheduled programs when a huge natural catastrophe struck, that really reeks.

You know that the fundie wingnuts are going to crow about how the quake and the tsnuami waves and floods that followed it are "proof" that the end of the world is very near. All the more reason to support Israel's worst excesses at the expense of Palestine and everybody else, rebuild the Temple, all that was "foretold." All the more reason to ignore injustice, tragedy and environmental degradation here and around the world --not their problem when they go off to paradise. They are so smug in their surety of being "saved" while all the rest of the world get their well-deserved eternity in torment. All arranged with their God of Justice and Mercy, of course.

So, I am wondering if this cable channel is catering to that. If so, it is despicable for so many reasons.

10. Thanks, I'm glad to hear that.
Though perhaps "lucky" might not be the word I would choose, given how the wingnut fundies are going to take all this. But then, they've never shown much interest in factual history anyway -- so maybe the History Channel isn't high on their list of viewing favorites. In any case, there will be no lack of TV and radio evangelists ready to cash in on the tragedy.

12. Yeah, well maybe they were part of the plot...
:eyes:  This made me recall something from 3 decades ago on one of my first trips to Japan. I had yet to learn enough Japanese (or cultural connect, or close friends which developed over the subsequent years.)

Was staying in a hotel in Tokyo (forget which one now, but it was a very tall one)

One morning we met for 'breakfast' and my eventual-to-be-dear-friend
Katsonobu Shimoji asked me "Do you feel the oss-quick?" (That's as close as I can get the phonetics)

It took me several minutes to figure out he meant "earthquake". (I hadn't noticed it, possibly in part due to the fact I had drunk half a bottle of Suntory Whisky before retiring the night befor. Ah, Suntory...mmmmmmmmmmm

:D

13. I was in an earthquake in Taipei once ...
Late 70s ... in the Kent Hotel, 30th floor. I remember my first inkling that something was going on was when I saw the drapes moving. Very odd, I thought. I looked out the window and saw the Taipei's skyscrapers swaying like hula dancers in an old loony toon.

14. Earthquakes
The bible does say that there will be earthquakes in diverse places:

"Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives,

the disciples came to Him privately, saying,

‘Tell us, when will these things be?’

And ‘What will be the sign of Your coming,

and of the end of the Age?’"

(Matt 24:3)

"Jesus answered and said to them,

. . . And there will be 'earthquakes in various places,'

(Matt 24:8)

11. That's excellent. Wish I could see it.
There's enough to worry about in the reality-based world about catastrophic environmental changes without invoking "revelations." And the potential Gulf Stream changeover is one of the scariest, both in its effects and in how fast they would follow. And the initial signs have already appeared.

Like I said, wish I could watch. Thanks again.
