racist David Dreier opend his mouth - where's the super glue?

Blacks die younger so they would benefit the most from privatization!

So says republican David Dreier on Late Edition, in his promotion of Social Security reform!

Video

Dreier: African American's are..would be the greatest beneficiaries of this as they would be able with a shortened life span, they would be able to pass this on....

Rangel: So we die earlier we should invest....

It's nice to see how republicans are looking out for African American's shortened life span.

1. Racist and gay. That's a unique combination.
Why am I reminded of the gay Klan skit from Chappelle's Show?

14. I know he has been outed.
I was referring to the racist part. As a gay man, I have run across quite a few gay bigots.

2. He's hardly the only one to make this point
Statistically speaking its accurate, although not, apparently, a sign that we should start worrying about conditions in the black community. No the real answer to problems in the black community is to give stockbrokers lots and lots of their money.

3. although this guy is *automatically* suspect
I think he was talking about the average "long term" life expectency of AA's being about a decade shorter than white americans. I think the average AA life expectancy is 60 years, and whites are 75 years (or something like that).

That perspective would mean that his argument is that AA's are paying into the system, but die before the 60-65 y/o retirement age and won't get the benefits, or they don't live as long into retirement and aren't thereore getting their "full share" back from the system.

I don't know for sure, because I didn't see the show you saw.

4. I saw that & couldn't believe it
The investments can be inherited, so they benefit by the plan. Rangel was stunned.

5. Actually, he is right...
and Gopers are not the only ones who favor the privatization of Social Security. Heck, I would opt out in a heartbeat.

I don’t trust this administration (or any other) with my retirement. You shouldn't either.

Edited on Mon Dec-27-04 02:09 PM by wuushew
Social Security is in much better shape than either the overall federal budget or medicare. Paul Krugman has written some good articles on the subject.

But thanks for buying into the administration's bullshit.

Here's just one of many sources that shoots down the myth of the SS "crisis:"

Inventing a Crisis
By Paul Krugman
The New York Times

Tuesday 07 December 2004

Privatizing Social Security - replacing the current system, in whole or in part, with personal investment accounts - won't do anything to strengthen the system's finances. If anything, it will make things worse. Nonetheless, the politics of privatization depend crucially on convincing the public that the system is in imminent danger of collapse, that we must destroy Social Security in order to save it.

Right now the revenues from the payroll tax exceed the amount paid out in benefits. This is deliberate, the result of a payroll tax increase - recommended by none other than Alan Greenspan - two decades ago. His justification at the time for raising a tax that falls mainly on lower- and middle-income families, even though Ronald Reagan had just cut the taxes that fall mainly on the very well-off, was that the extra revenue was needed to build up a trust fund. This could be drawn on to pay benefits once the baby boomers began to retire.

The grain of truth in claims of a Social Security crisis is that this tax increase wasn't quite big enough. Projections in a recent report by the Congressional Budget Office (which are probably more realistic than the very cautious projections of the Social Security Administration) say that the trust fund will run out in 2052. The system won't become "bankrupt" at that point; even after the trust fund is gone, Social Security revenues will cover 81 percent of the promised benefits. Still, there is a long-run financing problem.

But it's a problem of modest size. The report finds that extending the life of the trust fund into the 22nd century, with no change in benefits, would require additional revenues equal to only 0.54 percent of G.D.P. That's less than 3 percent of federal spending - less than we're currently spending in Iraq. And it's only about one-quarter of the revenue lost each year because of President Bush's tax cuts - roughly equal to the fraction of those cuts that goes to people with incomes over $500,000 a year. Given these numbers, it's not at all hard to come up with fiscal packages that would secure the retirement program, with no major changes, for generations to come.

8. SS is not just for retirement. Anyone can need its Disability
coverage if they get ill (ALS or MS or . . .) or have a severe accident.

An acquaintance just rolled his BMW Z3 and is now a quadraplegic. He is going to be thankful for Social Security disabilty payments.
