15. Sars, and related pathogens,
pose a clear and pending danger to humanity.
For example, the people who clean up
airliner cabins, should wear space-suits.
Union asleep, IMO.

19. Well, We're dropping bunker busting bombs on a regular basis..
Edited on Mon Dec-27-04 01:31 PM by firebee
I wonder how much that has to do with all the seismic activity we're seeing. It would seem that kind of vibration might have an effect on the stability of the faults along the plates. Of course, that's just another "conspiracy theory".

2. Stupidity
We could have it all. We're productive, resourceful, and smart enough for all of us to live like kings, starting tomorrow. But that'll never happen.

7. Your poll didn't include choices --
-- for fire and ice.

Not that I would have known which to choose.

'Went with 'pandemic' but I'm more personally afraid of religious nutcases.

Great poll.

10. I think the pandemic thing,
it was close - the conservatives are cetainly doing their best to kill everyone on the planet. But, because the US unlike most industrialized countries doesn't have a well organized, interconnected public health system you are much more vulnerable to pandemics. Look at the whole flu shot thing for example, Canada currently has stockpiles of Avian Influenza vacceine - ready to distribute as soon as it rears it's head. When SARS broke, the WHO was initially relieved it wasn't Avian Influenza - this is apparently a very serious one and if it gets into the human population the effects will be devestating. Has the US, as far as you know, done anything at all to prepare for it and if it happened, how long would it take for public health officals in the US to know what was happening?

27. I would say both in a sense...
caused by the Green Revolution collapsing, and the lack of viable, ariable land because the chemicals we put in it all these years, without using tried and true methods, like crop rotation, will make the dust bowl seem like just a really cloudy day.

29. I would agree with Solon. There is already a crisis of bees/polination.
But, does it matter how? It is in the cards by sheer population density. Any form of crisis that breaks down the supply-chain will be horrific.

Who am I to say how? It is just my guess as to what.

At the rate of ice melting into the N Atlantic, it is my suspicion that the Gulf Stream stalling will be the engine of N American famine. If honeybees lose their battle with the mite that is devastating them, it might be sooner and different.

When the oil runs out. We need a steady supply of oil to run the farm machinery and make the anhydrous fertilizer.

How many of us can grow the food we need in a window box?

16. The dust bowl was only a run up to the next catastrophe...
The Green Revolution isn't all its cracked up to be, and when it ends, we are all going to have to go out to the disused fields and try to grow food on ground that hasn't been rotated in 50 years. How are you with a hoe?

18. It's gonna be a "combo meal" actually...
we'll have a few natural disasters along the lines of the past week's tsunami, scattered around the globe, followed by associated pestilence and famine...and a pandemic will sweep the planet.

Yeah, I'll sleep well tonight with Those Happy Thoughts.
