George Carlin on the Gulf War
(Geore Carlin, get well soon!)

It's been a little while since I've been here and a couple of things have happened in that time - I'd like to talk a little bit about the war in the Persian Gulf. Big doings in the Persian Gulf. You know my favorite part of that war? It's the first war we've had that was on every TV station, and cable too. And the war got good ratings too, didn't it? It got great ratings - well, we like war!

We like war - we're a war-like people. We like war because we're good at it. You know why we're good at it? Because we get a lot of practice. This country is only 200 years old and already we've had ten major wars. We average a major war every ten years in this country - so we're good at it! And it's a good thing we are, since we're not that good at anything else anymore. Can't build a decent car, can't make a TV set or a VCR worth a fuck. Got no steel industry left, can't educate our young people, can't get health care to our old people - but we can bomb the shit out of your country all right.

Especially if your country is full of brown people. Oh we like that, don't we? That's our hobby! That's our new job in the world - bombing brown people! Iraq, Panama, Grenada, Lybia - you got some brown people in your country - tell them to watch the fuck out! We'll goddamn bomb them! Can you remember the last white people we bombed? The Germans, that's the only one - and that's because they were trying to cut in on our action. They wanted to dominate the world - Bullshit, that's our fucking job!

4. ACtually, later in that routine...
He notes how bombing Serbia and Yugoslavia is basically bombing towards the swarthy end of white folks--quasi-brown people. So we're all right there.

6. The tragedy behind his humor!
This country is only 200 years old and already we've had ten major wars. We average a major war every ten years in this country - so we're good at it! And it's a good thing we are, since we're not that good at anything else anymore.

Ouch

13. "Wine and Vicodin"
he says his usage isn't awful, but he wants to stop it before it gets to be a problem. Carlin's never been in rehab before, and has been able to kick all his other drug habits (Cocaine, marijuana, etc.) I'm confident he'll be fine.

18. Let's see...
He's had a problem with Cocaine and Marijuana in the past and now it's vicodin and wine.

It doesn't sound like he's been "cured" - it's sounds like he has swapped one addiction for the other.

IMHO

21. have always loved george!
no comedian like him. In the 80s..always went to see him whenever he performed anywhere near...but it got more difficult to see him as the years went by..and he suffered more and more from his addictions. the last time i saw him perform, it was in a little college near grand rapids, in michigan...very small turn out..and, i am sure...a real come down for him..from his previous spots...and it was very sad to see...he was so stoned on whatever, that he could hardly make it to the tiny stage that was set up..he tried to pull it off, but could not do it...and after about 5 mins, he just left. so, for many years..not a whole lot heard from him...and fans believed and hoped that he had conquered it and would be back..and he did...making a come back in the 90s..slow, but sure. This is a set back for him, but not a suprise...all things considered. i for one believe he will come back again...and this seems positive to me..that he has gone into rehab for help..and does know what he needs to come back again.
