Hands to Southeast Asia

Hi, all,

Members of the Flickr photo service and community have started up a project called "Hands to Southeast Asia." Members are simply photographing their own hands and posting them as an expression of shared grief and reaching out. They're mostly not merely snapshots of hands, but are artistic or expressive. Many hands are holding candles, or cupping the flame of a candle as if guarding it against a wind. One photo is holding a heart-shaped locket. I'm going to take a photo of my own tonight or tomorrow, probably holding my face in my hands as if weeping.

Flickr also offers free accounts, though the bandwidth for free members is limited and you can only have 100 public photos at a time. Still, that's enough that anybody who has a digital camera can sign up for a free account and post their own contribution.

Obviously this isn't a practical assistance for the victims and survivors of this disaster, but grieving and glabal community are important after such a stunning disaster, and this is an easy way for almost anybody to participate on an emotional level.

The last couple days have been emotionally difficult for me because of this tragedy, and I'm sure many people would benefit emotionally and psychologically from participating, or even from simply looking at the photos others have posted.
