questions about online tax filing |
|
We've always filed via snail mail, this year I'm tempted to buy tax software and try it out, we have a simple return the 1040 ez does what we need, however, because unka sam is looking for my tax return we need to file an injured spouse form as well. I'm wondering if this form is included in the software, or if I can download it from the irs. I've been attempting to print the form out from their website, it's in pdf form and my printer isn't, so, I get gobbledy gook everytime I try to print it out. So, I'm wondering if it may be just as well to buy the software and file electronic or stay with the snail.

1. Check out TurboTax. I use it every year. |

You can file your tax return on-line. And if you are filling out a simple form with just a few itemizations, it is free. And they walk you through everything.

I've had GREAT luck with it...and it's all done on line, and you get a printable copy of your return as a PDF. I've done it the last two years with NO problem... http://www.taxact.com/

And you should find about every form you need in the software.
I know Turbo Tax runs you through an interview process and determines what you will need, and walks you through it.
What's an injured spouse form? I've never heard of it.

4. I owe the government money |

and since they can't get it from me they go after my wife's return, which makes her an injured spouse, since it's her income and return and the only thing I have to do with it is putting my name and ss number on it.

You get married and then find out your spouse owes money in back taxes or is delinquent in child support. You file an "injured spouse" form to protect your portion of the refund.

6. I have used Turbo-tax for years |

and I file by snail-mail anyway. I just like to look at what I'm sending the IRS. If you are expecting a refund, make sure you get the injured spouse form no matter what you do, or you can kiss that refund goodbye. If you can use the EZ 1040, it seems unnecessary to buy tax software. Just get the form, since you still have a lot of time left, whatever way you can. Telephone, mail, download, whatever it takes.
