2. This needs to be added to the donation info on the DU home page
Rather than just a thread posted on the home page, there needs to be an organized set of links for donations, victim location in the different countries (Red Cross is doing this), and other relevant info for doing what we can for the victims of this diaster. That would also include spots for letters or advice from people knowledgable about what is the best strategy for donation. Lots of things, some of which I'm not thinking of at the moment.

The need for our help and for organized thinking about this disaster isn't going to go away quickly. DU needs to address it. This is above politics.

Are you listening, administrators? O8)

3. Amazon takes a nice heafty cut too!
Go to www.amazon.com and click on the big Red Cross logo.

You'll notice the large "AMAZON HONOR System" logo.

Now scroll down and look left.. "Create your own Honor System page"

CLICK!

Look LEFT (SEE DETAILS) Click "Payment Fees"

Read:

Amazon Honor System fees
The Amazon Honor System charges minimal transaction fees. The fee schedule is very simple. The person making a payment is not charged any fees at all. The person receiving a payment is assessed 2.9% of the total payment per transaction plus $0.30. The Honor System is designed to be self-service for your convenience. That way, our limited customer service costs allow us to keep your transaction fees low.

Translation: You just made a kindly donation to the coffers of Amazon.com. Of course you could have mailed a check to the local red cross branch office in your city.

Now: Scroll back to the donation page. How many donations have been made and for how much money?
As of right now it reads $2,189,000 and 39,053 donations.

Lets do the math! Shall we?

39,053 donations at the CONVIENENT $.30 transaction charge = $11,715.90
$2,189,000 at the 2.9% standard fee = $63,481

$75,196.90 total.

Wow Amazon is so generous. No wonder they're running that on their front page.

When all is said and done I'll bet they make a cool $300,000 off the deal. Not bad for not having to sell anything.

NOTE: Just write your check and put it in the mail.

4. But the message says "100 percent of your donation goes to the Red Cross"
I can't believe they'd be dumb enough to mean "minus our cut"

8. I agree...
Plus, it allows people from other countries to donate easily too, knowing their money is going directly to a relief fund and doesn't have to send it through other means.

Nearly 3 million in less than 36 hours. It is absolutely amazing, and everyone who can donate should do it.

If you search my username, you will see that this was the first and only time I have ever used profanity while posting.

It’s just that all day I have been listening to people blaming others for not doing enough and I snapped when reading your post. It was not personal. If you are ever in CT I’ll let you buy me a drink.

using Amazon. It's my birthday today, ordinarily I'd feel miserable, but this year I feel fortunate.
