Tonight's News Coverage of the Disaster
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 06:58 PM by Stephanie

CBS covered it until 6:37, then went to The War on Terror. Now, 6:45, they have returned to talk about the unpredictability of seismic events. Now on to the "housing boom."

HOW can they talk about a housing boom after they have just showed thousands of dead bodies and devastated people?

ABC covered it until 6:40, good coverage. Then they moved on to report on the WH and Bush's appearance today. They were actually pretty harsh with him and had someone (Gelb?) saying that the delay makes us look like we don't care about a human disaster. They are now talking about prescription painkillers.

NBC I did not catch - did anybody?

I am ASTONISHED that we are not seeing 24 HOUR COVERAGE OF THIS EPIC DISASTER. Barring that, I am SHOCKED that the NIGHTLY NEWS SHOW WOULD CONSIDER ANY OTHER STORY WORTH COVERING TONIGHT.

*edit* Now, at 6:56, they are doing -

ABC: PEOPLE OF THE YEAR

CBS: BROADWAY

NBC: THE PROBLEM OF DIVORCE

DO WE NEED ANY MORE EVIDENCE THAT OUR PRESS IS BROKEN???

1. 24 hours a day?
It's just not gonna happen, because this epic disaster occurred "elsewhere"

2. Good thing the Peterson trial is over.
If it were still going, there'd be no coverage of the tsunami at all.

3. GULP--But CNN devoted much of it's programming to it
when I was watching during the day. But I think that would be the case for all the cable news shows.

5. No cable. I am watching network with the plebes.
Lots of people still get their news that way. And for lots of them, that's all the news they get.

4. Anybody notice that NOBODY covered it for the first 24 hours ?
And then that bitch Daren Kagen covered it with a chirpy, happy little smile on her face like it was just another "brown people" tragedy.... I had to turn CNN off in disbelief... Sorry ... had to get that out ... I'm with you ... I don't understand the media...

Whores.... just.... WHORES !!!!

13. When it first happened and I was watching the coverage I think
the US reporters were all off on Xmas vacation. Until Monday morning we were not really getting good coverage.

6. Newshour now -
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 07:08 PM by Stephanie
Last night they gave equal time to the tsunami, and the Xmas travelers who were inconvenienced by the airlines. Equal time. Each topic got a panel discussion with experts.

*edit -

7:07 they have finished the news summary and are beginning tsunami story.

7. BBC
has given it almost 24 hour coverage since Sunday.

The cable channels we have from India, France, China, Germany and have also given extensive coverage. CNN picked up the story Monday and have given a lot of coverage since yesterday.

8. BBC World was good
BBC World gave the disaster twenty minutes out of twenty-five on PBS here. That's the only news I've watched lately. The anchor was Mike something, who does NOT suffer from SARSII (like Katty Kay, who prolly caught it from someone like Daren Kagan)... thus the reporting was direct and serious and well done.

I'm just appalled at the measly amount of aid money the USA is going to spend. I mean, isn't the inauguration going to cost more than 35m? And then the war and occupation in Iraq probably costs more than 35m a day...

14. I think the shrubster will be coughing up on this one because he
will eventually realize he has to play to his christian base or something similar. I say it this way becuase it certainly won't be coming from the goodness of his heart. No goodness and no heart.

11. Not sure 24 hours a day is called for,
But by golly, when there's a car chase or a college coed (white) lost in Wisconsin, or wherever, they interrupt all programming all day.

Bah.

12. NEWSHOUR has a Bush apologist on arguing that Bush is GENEROUS
They are giving him like ten minutes to talk about how much money we give for development and disaster relief and how Bush increased it and the guy who said we are stingy was misquoted. Wow. Is this Bush ego stroking really worth ten minutes? Why aren't we hearing actual news?
