Did Animals Sense Tsunami?

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA -- Wildlife officials in Sri Lanka expressed surprise Wednesday that they found no evidence of large-scale animal deaths from the tsunamis, indicating that animals may have sensed the wave coming and fled to higher ground.

An Associated Press photographer who flew over Sri Lanka's Yala National Park in an air force helicopter saw abundant wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, deer, and not a single animal corpse.

Floodwaters from Sunday's tsunami swept into the park, uprooting trees and toppling cars onto their roofs -- one red car even ended up on top of a huge tree -- but the animals apparently were not harmed and may have sought out high ground, said Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne, whose Jetwing Eco Holidays ran a hotel in the park.

3. I have my doubts
A few years ago during the Loma Prieta earthquake we had our dog in a kennel in Fremont while we were away on a business trip. We were on our way home and picked her up a couple of hours after the quake. The folks at the kennel said none of the animals had been behaving in any way out of the ordinary beforehand. (Of course, they may have already been a little disoriented by being in a kennel instead of their own homes....)

That was the first time in my life that I ever felt an earthquake in a moving car. We were in Danville on 680 driving on an overpass and we could see the bridge moving. It felt like we had just gotten a flat, and we saw a couple of other cars pull over to check their tires...

We were lucky, when we got home the only thing we had broken was a bottle of perfume and a vase.

My husband's poor auntie was in the bathroom on the can when the quake hit (insert rude joke here).

5. No.
It's just an urban legend that animals can predict impending disasters. It's been debunked numerous times.
