Poll question: When you've donated to help the tsunami survivors in Asia, come here.
Check in, click on choice 1 and kick the thread. If you want, say a little something about the tragedy has touched your soul: share a story, let us know who got your donation dollars, etc.

I don't want us to do this in a Pharisee-like manner, "Look at me, I donated! I am SO more righteous than you!" I want us to do this so we can keep an eye on donation dollars and to create a kind of sorryeverybody.com for Asia.

Write a little something from your heart to the survivors: the widows, the widowers, the orphans. Maybe later we can actually send our words to the world.

1. I donated to Oxfam this afternoon.
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 10:38 PM by ocelot
It wasn't just the enormity of the disaster that provoked my donation; it was the fact that George Wanker Bush pledged only $35 million in U.S. funds -- less than the cost of his inaugural festivities. We can't count on our government to do the job (we've spent too much money killing people so now we have nothing left to help people); it will have to come from individual donations from people who care more about helping than our sorry excuse for a pResident. Oxfam is a good, reputable relief organization; Doctors Without Borders is another. Do it.

2. I donated to Doctors Without Borders
I have always admired the work they do, and keep checking their website to see if they are needing anyone in my profession to volunteer. Alas, they have my occupation on the list of those they don't need.

154. I also donated to Doctors Without Borders and the Red Cross,
although I'm not a big fan of the Red Cross; just seemed right for some reason, but the Doctors are a great group of people and I support them the most of all. I think I'm more embarrassed by our fearless and brainless leader not making a timely statement about the disaster than I am about the piddly amount of money he pledged. The man never ceases to embarrass us all.

3. Americares
They provide medical supplies and drugs. A high percentage of dollars donated goes directly to aid. It's a good organization.

I wish I could say something meaningful to those who have lost so much, suffered so deeply, but I find words pitifully inadequate in the face of this tragedy.

54. sometimes threads like this will encourage/remind others to give
I was sort of overwhelmed with the question of who to give to, until I saw Skittles' Doctors Without Borders threads. Some other folks on here have also offered good suggestions with excellent reasons for giving to specific organizations

Plus most of us are anonymous on here, so we're not going to get any kudos

I felt a thread like this would encourage and remind people to give. I also wanted to say something to the victims of this tragedy.

Nobody knows who "Ladyhawk" is. It's the victims who are important.

57. Thanks for the post Firenze777 - it prompted a donation
I had already donated to Doctors Without Borders, but AFSC also has a lot going for it, so another donation is on its way to them as well, thanks to you.

- they do good work with low overhead
- they serve anyone who needs it, based on level of need, regardless of politics (pissing off conservatives, a pleasant side benefit)
- they bring good PR to my favorite religious sect

Welcome to DU!!:hi:

13. I donated to the Red Cross
My personal Christmas fund every year is, on payday throughout the year, I empty the singles and change from my wallet into my "cookie jar" (along with my occasional winnings from scratch-off lottery tickets), and by the time Christmas rolls around, I usually have a few hundred to spend for gifts, depending on how many times I've had to raid the fund during financial emergencies along the way.

This year, I boycotted Christmas and told my family/friends I was going to make a donation to charity instead. I had intended to donate the money to my local Anti-Cruelty Society, since I lost my dog this year, but instead tonight I decided to donate the money to the Red Cross International Relief Fund, to help the tsunami victims.

But I still donated it in Lucky's name. That's my dawg. She was a good girl.

14. International Red Cross
Im looking at the other organizations so I can donate more. I just want to make sure it gets somewhere.

This year has been a big year for the world and I feel like in some ways the world has become so desensitized to death. I didnt donate when Bam had the earthquake. I havent been marching daily in the street against the Iraq invasion. The least I can do is open my wallet and send what I can.

The magnatitude of this tragedy has touched me more then anything that has happened in my lifetime. I'm 26. I just cant comprehend the scope of what has happened. It has been very humbling and it has also made me start reassessing my life.

I work in technology. Im one of the lucky ones that has a job. Infact, I have the best job. I even telecommute. But Im stuck in Texas and dream of our house in the sierras of California. I dont even have a view of grass from my apt windows here. We came here on an exodus, of sorts, from Cali after being unemployed for almost two years and I have been truly blessed since Ive been here. It almost makes me wanna buy a tract home and put a Bush sign in my front yard. Houses are 1/3 of the cost of Cali, food is half the price, no state taxes.. yadda yadda. Well, this tragedy reminds me that I cant take it with me. If I have to struggle finacially to be in a place where I can see the stars then I guess that is the price. I made it down the bunny slope when we visited at Thanksgiving 3 times without falling on my ass. It was the first trip that I didnt fall and get frustrated. Funny how I had to move 2500 miles away to actually do it instead of when it used to be at my back door.

I have a savings plan to be able to get out of here in 3 years max, life is simply too short to live in this corporate driven nightmare of society. It's too short to battle the concrete jungle and the constant stimulation... buy this, do this.. It's sensory overload.

I wanna start a hippie commune, or a beatnik safehouse. I want to harbor political poets and organize and talk to people and change shit. I want to welcome soldiers home and tell them that there is peace in the world and they nor their children will ever have to do what they just did again. I want to hold the hands of indian mothers and give them a hug with all the knowing connectedness that another female can have in these type of situations.

I might not get to do any of those things but this makes me realize that I have to do something.

133. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
This has obviously affected you very deeply and your words inspire me. I live in the Sierra foothills. If you feel like it, PM me and tell me where you lived. I'd like to be part of your commune, I think. I've wanted to live near the ocean, but part of me has been afraid of earthquakes. The Sierras are safer, earthquake-wise, but they're full of Republicans. I really don't fit in here, although the country-side is beautiful. I love the land, but can't understand the people.

Peace to you, BeTheChange. Let me know if you decide to do something. :)

Actually, I'm donating on Friday which is when a big payment is due. Sooner if somebody else pays.

What I hope most though, is that this country finds its humanity and realizes that we can accomplish more by working together than creating false conflicts that keep us at each others throats. We have a choice to bring light into the world, or succumb to the fear. I pray this country stops succumbing to the fear and truly turns that corner that John Kerry talked about so many years ago.

136. I had a thought today about why we are so eager to go to war.
It's ethnocentrism, pure and simple.

It would be a much better world if every single individual was required to attend a four-year liberal arts college in a different country. Each country would have colleges they supported in a country completely different from the country of origin. Each college would teach about differences and how we're really all the same, deep down.

Of course, the biggies would have to be solved first: hunger, thirst, shelter, etc.

It's humankind's territoriality and inability to see the point of view of others that causes these wars...and of course, greed. I'm not sure how to address the greed issue. :(

153. I so agree with you, Ladyhawk
The last college I taught at had a wonderful study abroad program, and they did everything to make it easy for the students to go: letting them use their financial aid and even paying their airfare.

Still, I had to beg, plead, and nearly threaten my students to go, and we never filled the groups. This was in spite of the fact that all the returnees--every single one--said it was the richest and most eye-opening experience of their entire lives.

If I were a multimillionaire or billionaire, I would fund full five-year scholarships for students in which the fifth year, to be taken anytime after the sophomore year or after graduation, would be study or volunteering in a foreign country.

155. That would be so cool.
If I were rich, I would do the same. Someday, I would like the grass-roots progressives to have their own money pool so we could do what needs to be done. Feeding / helping the poor and hungry would come first of course. A person can't worry about higher learning unless they fulfill basic needs.

But can you imagine...once those basic needs are met...people attending school abroad and learning not to be so narrow-minded? If I had studied abroad, my epiphany would have come much sooner! I would still like to "study abroad."

Utopia would be a "University of the Americas" in several countries. That way, students could learn in their own language, but one of the requirements would be to take a class to learn the native language. After two years of study, students would be asked to speak only the native language to other juniors and seniors and the public at large, of course. Forays into the real world of the host country would be REQUIRED. No building an insular American community!

He wrote a book about his experiences: Serendib by Jim Toner.

I've thought a lot about the Sri Lankans, who are so very poor. It seems unfair that they were hit so hard by the tsunami. They had nothing. Now, many have less than nothing. Their families have been destroyed.

After reading Serendib, I wanted to do something to help Sri Lanka, but I wasn't sure which charity to trust. I didn't want a bunch of fundies showing up to convert them when what they needed was proper food, water, medical care, etc. Unfortunately, it took this tragedy to actually make me donate...for the island once called Serendib...serendipity.

Jim described folk of gentle humor and simple souls, people who would never understand our rushed way of life. When harvesting the fields, they would tell Jim, "Teeka, teeka" which means, "little by little." In other words, "Don't worry about getting the whole thing done. It will get done little by little."

I have trouble with the concept of "Teeka, teeka." For me, this is an all-or-nothing world and many times I've found myself in the middle of a project, feeling exasperated, when a little voice in my ear says, "Teeka, teeka." This is great wisdom which I find lacking in the American way of life.

Dear Serendib,

I am so sorry for your loss. So many people gone. So many people left behind. The god in me greets the god in you and lovingly holds that part of your soul that is in anguish. Dear, sweet Serendib, may you find healing, little by little.

45. Donated to Mercy Corp - employer is matching

My employer is matching all employee donations to Mercy Corp (http://www.mercycorps.org/home) and the International Red Cross.

Made a donation to Mercy Corp last night. I highly reccomend them - over 91% of their resources go towards humanitarian programs, and every dollar given helps them secure $16.51 in donated food and other supplies.

Many companies will match donations given to Mercy Corp - and you can check if yours will at their web site. Mine actually doesn't show up on their list, but we've been informed through internal communications that they will match. I just filled out that paperwork today. Please check them out.

Edited on Thu Dec-30-04 01:52 PM by DinahMoeHum
I've been donating to Americares ever since 16 years ago, when they played a huge role in relief efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake in Armenia (December 1988). It didn't hurt that a couple of my cousins knew people in Americares, having volunteered for them in the past.

Both Americares and Doctors Without Borders know their stuff and spend precious little on overhead. You can send $$$ to them with confidence.

(sigh) Every now and then, Mother Nature sends us a sign that she's still the boss on this planet. She's one active mean mama, and she doesn't give a shit about your social/financial status or your nationality if you are in her path.

What I mean to say is, we really need to take care of each other, and cannot really pretend we live on a different planet from those affected by this tragedy.

139. That is so true. We are a global village.
Yet for some reason, we still war with other nations and hoard wealth.

This statistic isn't accurate because I can't remember the exact details, but I read that the top four (or so) billionaires in the world have more wealth than all the poorest nations. I can't remember how many.

Call me a socialist, call me a commie, but that is disgusting. No one person should have that much wealth on a planet that suffers daily from starvation and disease. Sorry, Mr. Gates. I know you give some money to charity, but I think you could forego the many extravagant mansions and swimming pools, live more simply and give much of your wealth to help the world.

Americans don't live on an island. We should stop acting like we do.

Figured they would be in the best shape to get it out there right away.

Determining the amount was tricky but I used the following formula:

$ I donated to the American Red Cross after September 11 + $ I donated to the Kerry campaign in hopes of staving off a different kind of global disaster = $ I just sent to aid the tsunami victims

I hope it helps,

... I just don't trust Bush. Do you guys know this quake is exactly one year after the Iraq quake? Exactly! Remember Bush's attitude last year on Dec. 26th? We all know how interested he is in Iran. There's two links you've got to check out. Very well researched. The timeline is irrefutable. They warned the navy base at Diego Garcia island before the tsunami...yet they did not warn India, Thailand, or Africa even though they had 3-9 hours? No way. How hard is it to make a call, email, broadcast it even?

Please check out this link and youll see what I mean...

although I feel Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders are equally as deserving. I understand that the Red Cross pays a lot of money toward administrative costs, so I didn't even consider that org. After I donated, I wrote to bush via congress.org. I told him what an idiot I think he is but we Americans will make him look good by donating to the victims while he is enjoying his little party on Jan. 20. A party that is in extremely poor taste and the money for this coronation would have been better spent helping the victims in Asia. I wonder when the brownshirts will come and get me.

I understand your frustration, though. If I thought it would do any good, I'd write the boy king, as well. He is not deserving of a $40 million coronation. Plus...ssssshhh! (I think he cheated!)

in SE Asia and your donation may go to their other work. So if you want to specifically target your donation to the tsunami disaster you might want to consider a different organization (not that Doctors without Borders' other work isn't also important).

113. I finally donated to Doctors without Borders.
I think it might be a good idea to earmark a bit of cash each month to what will be the ongoing effort to help the victims and clean up. Even after everything is rebuilt, the scars will remain. I imagine every single person within ten miles of the sea was affected in one way or another.

To the survivors of the deadly tsunami:

I saw raw footage of the disaster as it happened and found myself shaking all over. God knows what it must have been like to be there. I am so sorry about what you had to go through and what many of you still must go through. Many of you have lost husbands, wives, uncles, aunts, grandparents, brothers, sisters and most sadly, children. We all weep with you.

It's a cliché to say, "Words fail me at times like these." But often, clichés have the ring of truth. I really don't know what more to say. Millions were affected by this disaster. How does one talk about millions of voices screaming in agony? All I can say is I hope you can find ways to heal during what is, for many of you, the defining event of your lives.

-Laura

I tossed in what I could spare and sent it to Oxfam. I wanted to make up in some small way for the cheap-ass trolls we've got in office right now. x(

Good folks in the Holdeen program in India. They are giving aid directly to the people, instead of running it through the government.

125. Doctors without Borders today
and my church will be taking up a collection (my daughter sent our pastor an email requesting that he do this--though I'm sure that was his plan anyway.)

To the Tsusami victims, I am so sorry. And I am so sorry that our government isn't stepping up to provide help as it should. Please see from the many individual donations that the government is not America.

158. Welcome to DU.
It's good to see new faces...and every chunk of cash helps.

I don't mind seeing what I perceive as competition between countries to see who donates the most. :) It will just engender more relief for the people who need it. This is the one time when I've thought competition between countries is a good thing.

The only problem is, it will piss off the weed because he won't want to join in this kind of competition! Not when it would do some good...oh no! :D What an ass! Hopefully, the progressive folk of America will take up the slack. I think they will.
