Gotta love these responses to the Tsunami aid requests
Picked up at another board I frequent:

# If I was in charge I would eliminate ALL aide and assistance going to anyone and see how much the world screams. If they want to call us stingy let's show them stingy.

# Either hate us or love us, pick one. If you hate us don't stand around with your hand out when something bad happens in your shithole country.

# If it happened in America how many countries do you think would actually get out their checkbook? Probably none, that is why I may be cold blooded or out of touch, but I really don't care.

# I'll donate as soon as the UN does something in the Sudan. I might die of old age first though...

# Where were these countries when 9/11 happened? What kind of aid did they offer us? I'd love to talk about what Indonesia did (people in the street saying "down with America?").....

# Hey we didnt have to dso anything for that country. They should be happy we are giving anything in my opinion.

# We ask the countries that did not help us on 9/11 how we can help them?

# But Freedom Fries.....the U.S. has a tendancy to sometimes fight back in interesting ways...in your opinion would we help North Korea if a disaster happened there?

---

On the positive side, Roskilde Festival (for whom I volunteer), have just donated 1 million DKK to aid the people in India & Sri Lanka.

It's no wonder that the US is the most hated country on the planet.

2. Exactly what kind of aid did we
need on 9/11 that even begins to compare with what is needed for this present disaster? Do these so-called "Christian" fucks even begin to comprehend the scale of the disaster and the magnitude of human loss and environmental destruction? And the fact that these are already some of the poorest areas in the world, as compared to our country, the richest in the world? I am more and more ashamed of my fellow Americans every day.

12. Yep!!
The Shrub loves death and destruction for OTHERS... it is amazing how Hitler-esque he really is...and how we allowed him to stay in the office for 4 more years! If any of us survive, MAYBE we have a chance to clean up his mess.

8. The last time I checked the Bible,
which was just yesterday, the expectation to share compassion with others hadn't been erased. Neither did it include a clause that help for others was dependent on their thankfulness or worthiness of it.

AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!

I'm going to Brazil on Tuesday and I must admit that I am nervous about how people will treat me or what they will say/ask because (at least with the group of people I'll be visiting) they know I'm a U.S. citizen. If I am able to do so around other Brazilians who don't know me, I'll lie and say I'm from Canada.

9. I Sort Of Agree With The First One
I think this is a in the "call a man a thief, and he'll see what he can steal" syndrome. Calling the U.S. stingy, even if true, is not the way to get them to pony up. I think it could be counterproductive, giving voice to the isolationist mentality.

"Call us stingy, will ya?!?!?" Then we give even less. Probably not the best strategy. You don't call someone you want to donate aid, stingy. Guilt trips don't work on governments.

14. You Missed My Point
I didn't call anyone an idiot, either. I'm suggesting that guilt doesn't work on collectives. I might work on the individual, but i think if the "world" needs the U.S. to pony up more cash, which we can certainly afford, perhaps by abandoning missile defense, (the world's stupidest idea), it doesn't help to say things that the "idiots" in D.C. would take as an insult.

Sort of a sugar/vinegar thing. If you tell a country, often enough, that they're not doing enough, when they are doing SOMETHING, they could easily take the attitude that what they are doing isn't worth it, and quit doing it.

I don't think you read my post carefully enough, because i don't think $35 million is near enough, given the scale of this catastrophe, but i think shaming a superpower into giving money is a fool's game.

16. I picked up on:
"I Sort Of Agree With The First One"

I called the person, who refereed to the U.S. as stingy, an idiot.

I would hope our "leaders" wouldn't base their decisions on the comments of a few people when another hundred thousand lives are at stake. I would hope WE, as a country, can be the adults and not play the "it's my bat and ball game".

You gotta admit, you put a few more qualifiers in the second time around. The fist time, you were "sorta" agreeing with some freeper
a--hole.

Anyway, we are on the same page.

Peace and happy New Year.

:)

11. Let's See If I Can Play This Game Right...
When a disaster hits the U.S., we're so "strong" we don't need anyone elses' help...right? It was Jacques Chirac who was the first world leader to NYC after 9/11, but we were "too proud" to accept their help. So, by refusing assistance from others and allowing our corporate masters to exploit and manipulate any and all disasters is what we should not only accept, we should embrace.

I mean, since Sri Lanka can't do much for us, other than be a source of cheap labor and raw resources, this doesn't come close to our need to watch over countries that have oil, like Iraq & Saudi Arabia, where their welfare will result in a safer, more peaceful world.

Are those bees still buzzing in my head? Trying to use Repugnican/wingnut logic always does that to me.

Cheers & Happy New Year
