Pat Leahy Appreciation Thread In Response To Freeper Attack |
|
Freepers have a nasty thread going about my Senator. Leahy has been speaking out loudly about the pathetic bushco response to the tragedy in S.E. Asia and he's been pointedly drawing comparisons to the obscene amount of money we've been spending in Iraq. He said "We spend $35 million in Iraq before breakfast."
OK, I admit it. I'm an unabashed fan of Senator Leahy. He's championed causes that are important to me, such as the eradication of landmines. He's a great guy, and he's been speaking out against the Iraq war since before its inception. His suggestion that we should take money from the unspent Iraq reconstruction fund of $18 billion and allocate it to tsunami disaster is a great one. So screw you, freepers; I only wish we had more Senators with the Integrity and dedication of Leahy. He's representative of real compassion, not the conservative version that offers nothing but cant.

3. It hurts to think that we would deprive the people of Iraq of |
|
infrastructure/restructure of their own country that we eliminated. On the other hand, it has to happen and maybe it still can happen without Halliburton squeezing U.S. taxpayers dry. If only it was easy to get some money from the corporations.

11. The $18 billion is just sitting |
|
in an account somewhere. Iraq is so unstable that reconstruction and expenditure of these funds is virtually impossible. Believe me, I don't want to take anything from Iraq, but as Leahy has pointed out, this money isn't helping anyone- either in Iraq or outside it.

I have some money in the bank, not doing anything, earmarked for future things. Perhaps I should just blow it now. After all it's not doing anything.
All this would be doing, would be to 'rob Peter, to pay Paul'.

20. I take it you don't have $18 billion |
|
sitting in a bank. And sometimes robbing Peter to pay Paul is perfectly appropriate. Say you've got $2000 set aside for a vacation and your furnace needs replacing, isn't spending part or all of that money on the furnace an appropriate thing to do? Also, presumably the $18 billion is gathering interest, how about spending that? To have that money sitting there, doing nothing for 18 months is what's stupid, releasing a small portion of it, like $150 million, to relieve the suffering of the Tsunami victims, is not.

21. That money is for Iraq. |
|
I'm not saying we shouldn't send more money, just not Iraq's money. There is other money that can be sent. Taking money earmarked for Iraq is unethical and stupid. We will need the money to rebuild Iraq.
You're acting like that is the only money available, and it's not.

Cheney was pissed because Leahy was going after him and his Halliburton connections. BTW, Freepers are mobilizing to send him nasty emails. I sent him a pat on the back. (pun intentional).

with a campaign contribution, and are proudly displaying a Christmas card featuring a picture of him with Mrs. Leahy at the announcement of his run for a sixth term, and the message: " Our prayers are for peace, and hope for the future." He's a wonderful man, and the kind of Senator I wish there were many more of.

We are the richest country on earth and we should be ashamed of what our President is doing. The fact is that the man intends to spend more on his coronation--er I mean his inaugural celebration--than he intends to give to help these people recover from this devestating natural disaster.

always gets you some blowback, but I know Leahy can handle it. I'm sure he knows that insults from the "right" people are actually compliments.

I also am extremely proud of both of my Senators; Senator Leahy(D) and Senator Jeffords(I). I am also proud of Representative Bernie Sanders(I).
I have just watched some MSM coverage of some extremely graphic coverage of the damage in the Indian Ocean. My reaction to the "response" of this administration, to what may be one of the most catastrophic historically recorded events, and all of the human souls in that part of the world humanity, is purely beyond words.
