122. oh yeah . . .almost forgot that idiot. What gets me is the fact . . .
that as a Christian (in my heart I try to live the way I should; however, I'm not a practicing Christian that goes to church. I just cannot find a church that I actually enjoy going to).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't we suppose to live our lives according to the New Testament and live Christ like? I mean Jesus totally changed this World with his words, deeds, and his sacrifice.

So here is my question . . .why do all these preachers quote from the Old Testament? I never hear them quote Jesus or anything in the New Testament.

Please, someone enlighten me. I would love to post this on the Freepers site but it would be immediately deleted. I really need a Republican Christian to explain this to me.

The answer to your question is money.

To these people fear equals money.

Old Testament equals fear.

New Testament equals love.

For those of you who don't follow White House press briefings, Lester Kinsolving is the Baltimore talk show host who is in the White House press corps and almost invariably asks questions that are not-so-veiled digs at liberals (or even moderates) or about gay-related issues, and the weirder the question, the better.

14. To ignore or not to ignore
If Fred Phelps really was just one isolated hateful crackpot then I would be ready to just let him fester in his own bile. But I see him as being the point man for the whole rightwing hate machine that runs through Falwell and Robertson through Coulter and Savage to the bloviators on Fox News. They pave the way for the Radical Right Wing in the Congress that's going to wreck Social Security and gut the Bill of Rights. By not standing up to their bullshit, by assuming that if WE ignore them, they will go away, we defeat ourselves. Their message of hatred and bigotry does have an audience---the "red state" voters who so irritatingly vote against their own interests for the "moral values" agenda of the reich wing. We need to go on the offensive against the voices of bigotry and hatred, not ignore them. At the very least, I'd like to see the GOP have to expend at least as much energy denouncing Fred Phelps as Al From feels he needs to spend trashing Michael Moore.

120. Robertson and Falwell are plenty extreme for me
Anyone who says that 9/11 was caused by "gays and feminists" is totally wacked out, in my book. Phelps is perhaps a bit more direct and in your face, but if you read what Robertson and Falwell have said over the years, on a variety of subjects, they're just as insane as Fred Phelps. And they're widely considered "leaders" of the religious rightwing. (BTW, I'm not in any sense talking about religion or spirituality. I'm discussing the organized political movement, collectively known as the "religious right".)

Edited on Sat Jan-01-05 10:25 AM by Geek_Girl
He may be an extreme part but he is still a faction of the Religious Right and represents those that share his views. Sorry but the truth is not pretty. I have a friend who 7 years ago I thought had extreme right wing religious views. Today his views seem more moderate. His views haven't changed, but the religious right has become more extreme over the years.

My husband has decided that the right wing fundamentalists have forgotten (or ignore) all of Christ's teachings and therefore are "little c" christians, as opposed to Christians - who love Jesus and follow His teachings.

115. Pray tell, dear.. How on Earth can one mock religion? There are entirely
too many religions for one to mock in a reasonable amount of time.

After inferring that I was doing such a silly thing, you say something that concerns me for your soul.

"You Are mocking Religion, not me, but by doing so you are mocking all religious people."

Aside from the silliness involved in mocking all religious people (Can you just imagine the time that would take?), you have me mocking "all religious people" but NOT you. This leads me to the conclusion that you are not a religious person.

I shall pray, Alicia, for your souls to be kept from the lakes of syrup.

I suppose it's the tempation to slur my name since my beliefs are worn so predominately upon my sleeve. If that does ofend you, I shall recuse myself of making statements concerning my faith and belief as I was always taught that good manner dictated so. My Sainted Mother always spoke to me when I was a child that I should not profess my faith in public places out of respect for others who may not feel the same. She told me that to do so would be rude, boorish and might well invite ridicule upon myself.

It was his SON who was a district manager for Gor ein 88 (Gopre had no idea who he was and Phelps wasn't yet on his loud anti-Gay rempage). His record as a civil rights lawyer is mostly in his head.

10. Phelps
came to demonstrate at my daughter's high school and at her graduation because the school theater group performed The Laramie Project. It was a learning experience for all. I joined the high school kids and marched around just like the good old days, except there were a lot of police out, more per demonstrator than I remember in the big antiwar demonstrations of the early 70s. A lot of little kids from Kansas have asked their parents what his pictures are about. I guess he's into sex education.

88. I think what she meant was
she marched against him. He came to our area a few months back and even the rednecks in this part of this very red state (OK) told him to go to hell. He was protesting at a few churches and a high school which used to be attended by a gay student that was interviewed by the Washington Post. We all held a vigil the night before at the GLBT community center. He was in front of the high school in the morning as the students arrived with his vile family and their vile signs. We were there when the students left school that day...70 of us with brooms sweeping the sidewalk of the hatred he had brought to town and clearing the way for the students to go home with a positive message of peace and tolerance.

He did so much good drawing all the folks together here in defense of their own, I was thinking about sending an email asking when he was coming back. He is such a wackjob he actually has the opposite effect he intends. It turned into such a warm, nurturing, and uniting experience for everyone! I think he'd just shit himself if he actually knew how much good he does and not in the way he thinks he does! LOL

36. Ignore him
He is not a nice guy when you piss him off. The man goes after folks with a vengeance and his whole family is made up of attorneys so he usually gets away with it.

He has been known to harrass by phone, fax, and pickets. I know people who have fucked with him and they regret it. So just ignore him. If you must counter demonstrate, park you cars far away so he can't get the license numbers. That's how he finds out who is attacking him. And trust me, you don't want him to find out who you are.

Phelps and Green's hatred aside. This does sound like a valid free speech issue. Unless Green was advocating violence he has the right to hate whoever he wants. 106. Sometimes I wonder about people like him
I think to myself, what the hell happened to him? How did he become so twisted and hateful?

I don't think kids are born like that. I think kids get made like that. Something twisted him- and something similar has twisted his followers. What is it?

It's sure not in the New Testament- and it's not in the Old testament- at least not unconflicting- however one does the exegesis.

There's something more going on here.

What is it that twists people like that? What is it that makes them into nearly everything they claim to hate?

As nutty as this guy seems, I have a feeling he'd print material until he was broke as long as he thought someone was believing the shit he was sending out before he'd call it quits.

but be sure to have the information sent to:

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW

(Ahem. Not that I would espouse doing anything like that, of course... O8) )

113. This is the most hated man in Kansas.
Thankfully the media around here ignores him for the most part.

117. Why Are So Many Christians So Bigoted? Explain Faith-Based Hate To Me...
Edited on Sat Jan-01-05 10:42 AM by arwalden
... frankly, I think this is such a compulsion and obsession for many of them that it could be rightly characterized as a mental illness.

Where does all this hatred and bigotry come from?

143. Don't ask me!
I may be a Christian but that's where the similarities end between me and the hate-filled, hate-preaching fundies.

Their God is a great big vengeful bully.

My God is loving, benevolent. And doesn't send people to hell for not hearing his name.

This was an act of nature. Phelps is out of his fucking gourd, as usual.

118. Giving Christians a Bad Name.
When you have these obscene examples of Christianity twisted into pulpits of hatred, it really screws things up for decent Christians.

Real Christians should distance themselves from this insanity.

Jesus was NOT obsessed with homosexuality, Fred Phelps is.

Whatcha got in the closet, Fred?

132. He's so afraid of his own homosexuality
That he's built a world around himself of people he has convinced that God hates what he really hates about himself. Sad, really.
