1. Without the EC, the only states that would be important
would be states with population centers. Think about that.

3. not necessarily.
right now repub votes in blue states are ignored and Democratic voters in red states are ignored. If EVERY vote counted then blue states would see Republican candidates and red states would see Democrats. Right now I live in a red state and I didn't see a single campaign ad in TV after the Conventions except for 1 or 2 on cable. My votes simeply wasn't as important as that of someone in Ohio despite the fact that my State (Virginia) has its share of votes.

4. States like California would be marginalized
With say 15 million voters California splits at about 5% either way; that is a margin of 750,000 votes. Virginia, on the other hand, with 5,000,000 votes usually splits out by 15% or more to the Republican side: that would be a margin of 750,000 votes.

If you get rid of the elctoral college we will get WIPED OUT in the following election. In the above example, 56 electoral votes in California would be eclipsed by 15 votes in Virginia.

Be carefull what you wish for, you may get it.

2. balance
make each rep. district a 'state,' insofaras their votes are counted individually. that way states can be divided with out giving all advantage to population centers.

5. I could go along with that
Winner in each congressional district gets the electoral vote of that district. Winner in each state gets the two senatorial electoral votes for the state.

One thing to consider if you went to an all-popular vote election, can you imagine a nation-wide recount???

6. The electoral college must be abolished
Because of it, there's the perception of red states/blue states, when in reality the country is a blend of purple. With the current map, the perception is that the great majority of the country is red, when that simply is not the case. Everyone likes being on a winner, and with the current system, it makes it appear as if there's only one choice.

The electoral college is a bullshit way of voting, period.
